I think I could survive. I just don't know what I would do with myself with all of the free time. I enjoy football betting; however as you know it is only a part of the year. Maybe I need to look into some other sports.

Enough betting all year round thanks to football, baseball, soccer, hockey, basketball, floorball, winter sports and other stuff.
I intend to spend most of my time on learning Spanish, do lots of sports (mainly surfing and some biking) and maybe later this year do some volunteering, if I can find an interesting project. Imo it's not that hard to keep yourself occupied ;-)

Not a bad deal.

How old are you?

What nationality are you?

It's 950$ per month + electric bill, but includes a bike + surfboard rental and also a small tuk-tuk like vehicle that could carry a surfboard.

28, will turn 29 next June and I'm German. Except for vacations and 2mth of my military service I spent all my life in Germany, so I guess that year will be quite a change, but I'm looking forward to it (not really surprising since I didn't lose my job, but actually quit it to do exactly this).

Average household income in the US is $50 000. That means $500 000 in total earnings by age 30 or $1 million by age 40. Even for those of us who are closer to half those numbers, if a year away from the workforce is completely unmanageable, something has gone very, very wrong

I've always lived below my means. With my savings I could go 3 years without a job.

I retired [i am 72 yes old ] Dec 2007 to take care of my wife who has many health issues, she is 57 years old. I recently accepted a job as a buyer for a preowned car lot, doing most of the work from home on my p/c & attending one auction a week. I wager & play online holdem daily, so i guess you could say i took 3 years off & gambled every day before accepting this job, but the number one priority is my wife's health & well being,gl.
