The Cleveland Browns have released the following six veterans:

LBs Eric Barton and David Bowens, DE Kenyon Coleman, DT Shaun Rogers, TE Robert Royal and OT John St. Clair.

Rogers was signed through the 2013 season and was due $5.5 million in base salary along with a $500,000 roster bonus in 2011.

Coleman was signed through 2011 and was due $2.5 million in base salary along with a $1 million roster bonus for next season.

Barton was signed through 2012 and was due $3.05 million for 2011.

St. Clair was signed through 2011 and was due $3.225 million in base salary for next season.

Royal was signed through 2012 and was due $2.045 million in base salary for next season.

Bowens was signed through 2012 and was due $1.65 million in base salary for next season.

All totaled, the Browns saved nearly $19.5 million ($19.47 million) in base salary and roster bonuses for the 2011 season with the releases of the six veterans.

All of those players were signed to contracts before the front office, which includes Mike Holmgren and Tom Heckert, had taken over for the 2010 season. And with the expected move to a 4-3 defense, Barton, Rogers, Bowens and Coleman were not good fits for that scheme.

All six players are free to sign with any team. They were not subject to the waiver process once the Super Bowl concluded.

At least they are not dumb enough to release JOE THOMAS, who a few regard as the best player in the entire league.
