2011 NBA All-Star Weekend is Friday, February 18 through Sunday, February 20 and taking place in Los Angeles, California. The Slam Dunk Contest will be Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 8pm EST.
The very first slam dunk contest was won by Julius Erving at the 1976 ABA All-Star Game. The current champion of the NBA Dunk Contest is Nate Robinson (formerly of the New York Knicks, now with the Boston Celtics), who is the only person to have won the event three times.

In the 80's, with players like Julius Erving, Larry Nance, Dominique Wilkins or Michael Jordan, who were able to make art executing a dunk, the NBA decided to include the Slam Dunk contest (and also the legends game) in the NBA All Star Weekend.

The rules are simple; each player has to make a number of dunks. The jury gives their notes. The highest scores pass to the next round. In the final round the player with the highest number of points wins.

Especially in the first years it was a huge show, with great stars like Michael Jordan or big surprises like Spud Webb. While years passed, there was less imagination, and the big stars didn't want to participate because of the risk of injuries. These were some reasons of the elimination of the Slam Dunk contest in 1998. But now, since 2000, with a new generation of dunkers led by Vince Carter the show is back!

This year, players included in the contest are: Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers, Serge Ibaka of the Washington Wizards, DeMar DeRozan of theToronto Raptors (his second appearance), JaVale McGee of the Milwaukee Bucks.

Last year’s champion, Nate Robinson, won't defend his title, and four players (mostly tall players) who are debuting in the contest will fight to become the 20th winner of the Slam Dunk Contest.
Blake Griffin is the fan favorite. Coming back from a season-ending injury, the powerful dunks of the Los Angeles Clippers rookie are always between the NBA top plays. Serge Ibaka is familiar with this kind of event, winning the Spanish dunk contest before jumping to the NBA. DeMar DeRozan is the only guard between the participants and replaces Brandon Jennings who is currently sidelined with a foot injury. JaVale Mcgee's height is rare in the Slam Dunk Contest, and could become the first 7 footer to win it.

Fan voting will determine again the winner of the contest. Who is your favorite to win? What was your favorite all-time dunk? Look for exciting NBA All Star Weekend prop betting options later this week at Skybook!
