Northern Trust Open Preview<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Phil Mickelson is the favorite this week at the Northern Trust Open in Southern California. It has been a strong start this Golf betting season for Mickelson who already has two Top 10 finishes. He has won this event twice and is the all-time leading money winner at Riviera. Mickelson is listed as the 7.5-1 favorite at SBG Global.

This is the seventh time since 1995 that Mickelson has started a season with at least two Top 10 finishes in his first three PGA Tour starts. When Mickelson starts well he normally does well at The Masters so keep that in mind when you bet that event in early April. This will be the fourth straight week that Mickelson will be playing in a PGA Tour event and he will make it five straight next weekend when he plays in the WGC-Accenture Match Play event. At Riviera, Mickelson has had a lot of success in the past four years with two wins and a second place finish. He has played 11 of his 16 rounds during that time under par.

The defending champion this week is Steve Stricker who makes his first start in the U.S since the Qatar Masters. Stricker played well in Hawaii earlier in the year and he has five wins on the PGA Tour since 2009. Stricker is the 12-1 second choice at SBG Global sportsbook. The runner-up last year in this event was Luke Donald who is 20-1. Also at 20-1 is Matt Kuchar who has three top ten finishes this year, Dustin Johnson who tied for third last year in this event and Hunter Mahan who seems to be in contention every week. Paul Casey and JB Holmes are next on the odds board at 25-1.

If you are looking for a couple of longshots then Bubba Watson and Steve Marino are worth a look. Rain is in the forecast for the early part of this event which will make length a huge factor. There are not many players who can hit it farther than Bubba and he already has a win this betting season. He is 43-1 and worth considering. Steve Marino was in the hunt last week before faltering but he has a lot of value at 60-1 and he finished in the top five at Riviera last year.
