Very tough batting order to construct

.......not really liking Ellsbury batting directly behind Ortiz.

Perhaps they bat ELLSBURY 8th or 9th?

scutaro

is what i'd go with. I'd go with scutaro at 9th, due to the fact he has a high OBP. Ellsburry is a career .290-.295 hitter, so I think the 7 hole would do him well. By the time he bats he will often times have men in scoring position in which a single will do alot of damage.

Redsox have a very scary offense this year, if Saltamacchia lives up to this potential they are by far the most potent offense in the AL, imo.

the red sox are gonna win 115 games this year! 115-47 mark it down lolol j/k

it is a good lineup on paper but ortiz is a year older so who knows what he will give you for production this year. id take .260 25hr and 90rbi's right now no questions asked

they had a lot of guys hurt last year if they can stay healthy they could be a force, jd drew is already saying his hamstring is an issue so we will see....

I've heard they are leaning toward 9th.

I think it could be an advantage moving Pedroia towards bottom of lineup

Ortiz should be batting no higher than 7th/8th until he proves his slow starts to be the thing of the past. He's 45yrs old too a few less ABs might do him good.

Excellent idea there, Gabe !

Some Sabermetric guys argue that the order means little, but I don't buy that at all.

I'd be traditional and lead off with a fast guy/ high average/ base stealer guy, then another similar guy behind him, then the power hitters.

Dropping Ortiz way down makes great sense, he's not 45 ?, but may be done ? He starts slow the last few years anyway. 8th isn't unreasonable.

What the Sox need to do is sit Ortiz against lefties and give Cameron some looks. Francona is worried that Big Papi will lose his rhythm or something.

Good point....no reason to have this guy 6th or higher in the month of April.............think Francona may do this.

As always, batting order is pretty meaningless. The difference between the absolute most efficient and least efficient (pitcher leadingoff, Pujols ninth) is at most four to five wins per year

Francona does that infatuation with alternating righties and lefties, then there was 2009 when Ortiz ended the year as a below average hitter and still batted third for most of the year, so my guess:
Crawford
Pedroia
Gonzalez
Youkilis
Ortiz
I would bet heavily on that as the top five over anything else listed
Drew
Scutaro
Ellsbury
catcher

There are reports surfacing suggesting Jacoby Ellsbury will begin the season batting 9th. It’s the logical choice for the Red Sox lineup construction, but one that will have negative impacts on Ellsbury’s fantasy value. The drop from 1st to 9th will cost him somewhere around 120-150 PA’s over the course of the season, which will result in about a 20 Run decrease for Ellsbury based on his career run/PA averages. It’s meaningful and makes Ellsbury more of a 80 Run/55 SB threat than the 100 Run/70 SB threat many will be drafting him as. Do not take the trip down the batting order lightly. Last year the Red Sox leadoff spot generated 780 PA’s, while the 9th spot generated 640 PA’s. It’s a huge detriment to Ellsbury’s value.
