in the early 2000's they were a dominant team, 1 seed regularly. i have the game on now and they look like a shell of what they used to be.

i am confused as to why they arnt a dominant team, especially with dc area recruiting, etc.

Gary literally refuses to deal with AAU, their coaches and all their sleaziness. He could get away with it 10 yrs ago but not now.

Well after they won the title and went to the sweet 16 the next year they had top 10 recruiting classes. And all those McDonalds All Americans turned out to be busts/let downs. Nick Caner Medley, Mike Jones, Travis Garrison, Ibekwe, all were good but not great. A few of the teams have ran into bad luck in the tourney. Last year the team was poised to make a big run until MSU hit a buzzer beater on them as time expired. Greivis Vasquez rebirthed the team and is a top 3 terp of all time. But Gary won't deal with sleaziness as well, won't pay for players which a lot of teams do. Also he loses his top assistants who go on to become head coaches elsewhere.

2002 actually. IU never really had a shot too. Took the lead for like 20 seconds and then Juan Dixon put an end to that

Gary Williams, he lost all his assistants who could recruit. He is a horrible in game coach. This is the first year that he doesn't have a bailout scorer or shooter. He always had someone who could bailout his 1950's style flex offense. There's no Juan Dixon, Mike Jones, grevis, or drew Nicholas. As a Maryland fan, I will always be grateful for the NCAA championship and the acc championship, but I think it's time for something to change in College Park

What would you suggest Maryland do? Not too many great coaches out there. He had the team in a great position to make a deep run last year and lost on a buzzer beater. Pe'Shonne Howard and Stoglin are proving themselves to be legit scorers and Michal Parker is a 4 Star player who should get a ton of minutes next year. As long as Jordan Williams comes back, which he should because he is not an NBA player nd won't be a first round pick, the team will be pretty solid next year. Bowie and Tucker have been quite the let down this year and did not step up when needed. I would prefer Gary to any coach getting all these NBA prospects and be in a poisition like NC State, Wake, and Georgia Tech

I don't know if letting Gary go would be good because he's the face of the program. They need to get some higher profile assistants who can recruit especially talent in the Washington dc area. They also need to figure out how to implement a new offense. This offense bogs down a team and the game. Stoglin is a solid scorer who I think should have a good career at Maryland. I'm not a fan of Jordan Williams, his stats look good but he has to be one of the laziest players to play at Maryland. He may just need to lose some weight, but I don't ever think he's boxed out in his life. He also seems to disapeer a lot toward the end of games.

Jordan just lacks real post moves but he is only a sophmore and can put up 26 any night. Last night vs NCST he was a machine when he got the ball. The problem is that the team likes to go away from him during stretches of the game and then when he gets it, he decides to force it. He does struggle sometimes with rebounding but w/o him the team gets absolutely no rebounds.

Terps season over: No NIT bid even with 19 victories

Posted: Monday, March 14, 2011 9:18 am | Updated: 9:37 am, Mon Mar 14, 2011.
By Josh Land, Times Staff Writer | 0 comments

For the first time since 1993, the Maryland men's basketball team won't be participating in the postseason.
The Terrapins had a streak of 17 consecutive years in either the NCAA tournament or NIT ended Sunday night when they weren't selected for either. It marks just the fourth time in coach Gary Williams' 22 seasons at his alma mater that Maryland didn't play in the postseason.
The Terps went 19-14 this year and tied for seventh in the ACC at 7-9, one year after sharing the conference's regular-season championship. Maryland has won at least 19 games in 15 straight seasons.
Four ACC teams earned NCAA tournament bids - Duke, North Carolina, Clemson and Florida State. Three others were selected to play in the NIT - Boston College, Virginia Tech and Miami.
"After 19 wins and beating Penn State, Florida State and Clemson, it's disappointing that we're not at least in the NIT," Williams said in a statement. "We played right with Duke for 35 minutes and got a win in the ACC tournament. It's kind of surprising we weren't selected.
"We worked very hard to get to where we were with 19 wins this year. We're looking forward to the start of next season."

Its a horrible year. The seniors didn't pan out. Will probably have a pretty good team next year tho. Freshman are good and incoming class is pretty good. Also remember this years team should have had Terrence Ross who is at Washington who backed out of his committment. But its a bad point, but i think they will rebound next year

It will be a very interesting hire for Maryland.

According to Maryland's Rivals.com insider message board (Terrapin Times), the head moderator says the top 3 candidates for the position, in no particular order, are Sean Miller, Jamie Dixon, and Mike Brey.

FWIW, when Ralph was canned the same guy said Randy Edsall's name was "clanking around" from day one, despite all the buzz around Mike Leach, so he has some credibility. As a Maryland fan, I'd kill for Miller or Dixon... and probably put Jay Wright in that mix too but I don't hear his name mentioned right now.
