Reviewed this a few weeks ago, completely changed my plans for tourney watching. Much less motivation to post up in a bar the entire day since you're not missing nearly as much action as you would previously, considering the games are staggered this year and not as simultaneous. Can basically watch at home and on PC and not really miss a beat other than some first half action (which sucks, but still...).

Yep. There shouldn't be hardly any games coming down to the wire at the same time.

Billy Packer and Charles Barkley both miss the point in their pathetic song and Dance

BOB RAISSMAN

Torrie/News
Former CBS hoops analyst Billy Packer isn't a fan of NBA voicers like Charles Barkley (below) calling NCAA Tournament games.

Billy Packer hovers over March Madness like a helium balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. This, despite being fired by CBS Sports in 2008 after working as an analyst on 34 consecutive Final Fours.

Packer always knows what buttons to push. Last month, he told USA Today that ESPN would be a better home for the NCAA Tournament than the new CBS/Turner alliance.

Part of his rationale was based on announcers. Under this merger of the mouths, TNT's NBA voices will join with CBS Sports broadcasters to work the tournament. Four different outlets - CBS, TBS, TNT, truTV - will be used to air every tourney game.

Packer claims viewers will be cheated because NBA announcers have limited knowledge of the college game. The new setup, Packer said, is like CBS' Verne Lundquist doing SEC football play-by-play all season "and then having somebody who just did the pros come in to call the SEC title game."

His assertion is ridiculous. Marv Albert, who will be working the tournament, could fly in from Mars to call a CYO game and give a killer performance.

No, there are a couple of more important points here. One has to do with the response Packer always inspires. Thursday, Charles Barkley, playing the role of all-day sucker, reacted to Packer's comments. He called Packer a "jackass." No sweat off Packer's back.

He's been called that before. Hope Sir Chuckles will be more innovative and not mail it in during his tourney appearances.

"Hey Billy Packer, you might be right," Barkley said on TNT. "We might not be very good and know all the players on all the teams in college basketball. I don't know any players on Wofford or UNC Asheville. You are probably right. But stop being a jackass."

Is it just coincidence Barkley reacted to Packer's nearly month-old comments the week before Turner's NCAA hoops coverage? Barkley's rant was calculated to stir up controversy. It was another way to hype Turner's involvement in the tournament.

Barkley, an alleged man of the people, missed the real issue here, one Packer (he reacted to Barkley by challenging him to a debate on intecollegiate athletics and college basketball) missed, too.

There's a huge number of young broadcasters working college basketball games on radio and TV from sea to shining sea. With Turner getting its hands on this college hoops extravaganza, the time was right to locate the cream of the youngblood crop, use them on the tourney, thus creating some new broadcasting stars.

Instead it's the same old, same old.

Bringing new talent to the Dance would have been risky. It also would mean Turner Sports would be unable to draw more attention to its brand (and NBA coverage) with its current stable of announcers, which is the ultimate reason why Barkley & Co. are involved in the NCAA Tournament.

I agree they should be able to highlight that the game is on another channel with switching to it since they are partnered .

Im just happy that I dont get stuck watching Duke blow someone out by 30 when there are other games on. Now I can actually watch other games.
