LAS VEGAS -- Owners of the Sahara Hotel and Casino announced Friday that the landmark Las Vegas Strip property would close on May 16.

Sam Nazarian, CEO of Sahara owners sbe Entertainment Group, issued a statement saying in part, “The continued operation of the aging Sahara was no longer economically viable.”

Employees were notified of the pending closure on Friday morning. According to the statement, ownership will offer workers "sessions with Nevada Job Connect and provide career counseling."

The Sahara opened in 1952.

SCOOP up those collectible chips while you still can.....

How as that worked out historically ?

I'd think you'd need to get high quality chips, the equivalent of an uncirculated coin or a crisp bill, card, etc. those might not be available from the casino ? It would be to their benefit to make them available to collectors, though !

A metal $1 token has to cost more like 30-50 cents to manufacture a $5 chip ( or $25 etc.) probably is about the same cost ?

I'd be selling new ones in the gift shop for sure. A great chance they never get cashed in.

regular circulated/ used chips....... I'm not so sure those are worth "Scooping up". I don't think many people collect $100 and higher chips, but I'm no expert on tokens.

Tropicana is being renovated. IP and CC generate cash flow. I'm sorry to see it go, it's another link to Vegas history that will be gone. What's going to be there, a vacant building, an empty lot, or something similar to what sits on the old Stardust site?

went there a few years back, did the nascar ride and played some dollar black jack. never wanted to go back, but was nice to at least have been in one of the old school casinos.
