California is closely monitoring efforts to contain leaks from a quake-damaged Japanese nuclear plant, a spokesman said Saturday, as experts said radiation could be blown out across the Pacific.

“At present there is no danger to California. However we are monitoring the situation closely in conjunction with our federal partners,” Michael Sicilia, spokesman for California Department of Public Health, told AFP.

I think this fear is unfounded... but I usually think fear is unfounded.

It'd be interesting to know how much radioactivity could get out, and compare that to chernobyl. All the experts I've read here in Oregon say that there are so many failsafes now that there's no way anywhere near the amount of radioactivity would be leaked... but who knows. It'd be an interesting conversation though, as I believe weather patterns are partially to blame for the huge amount of people chernobyl was responsible for killing/infecting.

That's a good point. Is the weather going to suck everything into the ocean or have it drift to a place not safe for humans. . .
