Going to New York with the wife to sight see, shop etc. Anybody have an opinion on nicest hotel close to attractions mid to upper end in price. Looking at hotel reviews and not knowing city at all we are leaning towards Sofitel Hotel or The Michelangelo. Any opinions would be appreciated

Wow. Hope you have a great time man. When I think of New York I think pricey but with that being said, New York City is on my bucket list but more like towards the bottom. What can I say....I'm a west coast guy. Have FUN and please report back during and after the trip.

can we ask about budget? the nice places are really pricey ($300 - $600 per night weekdays)

weekends can be cheaper, especially in the financial district

a hotel I like is across the Hudson in Hoboken. The W, brand new and on the river with a majestic view of the city, great rooms and restaurants/bars. Right near the Path, which is essentially a subway into the city that goes under the river

i went to NYC in Sept 2009 for my honeymoon....it was super awesome.

My advice is to go on Priceline (do they still have that?) select a quality hotel you want (ie 4 star, etc) and your district (I suggest Times Square district).

This isn't like vegas where you want a specific hotel because of a casino or something.....all quality hotels in a certain area shouldn't disappoint

just watch out for the Moonies around there. lol
the building is mostly owned by a church . but guess the Hotel is on it's own

Since you are by there, you can check out the Macy's flagship store, think you might be a little early for the Holiday windows
but then again they might be on display already. Must See if opened for display......Big Shopping area

Go to the top of the Freedom Tower, go see a musical on Broadway, maybe a river cruise from South St Seaport.

I would NOT recommend going to the Statue of Liberty or Ellis Island, too time consuming. And you can see them both from the Freedom Tower.

You can do the Empire State Building if you don't do the Freedom Tower. If you do that, do their virtual ride through Manhattan too, I thought that was pretty cool.

On the west side of the river, the Chart House is a pretty good restaurant on a pier sticking out into the Hudson with majestic view of the city at night

And yes, I'm a professional tour guide, for a bunch of Italians whenever family comes to the states.

Thanks Willie I heard it may be a bit windy at The Statue as well.

Taking the fam. Kids are 13 and 10 and the pass has 100 attractions and want to hit them optimally.

Do a play if you can, some great musicals for the kids, and you can score discounted tickets at NYTIX

They have at least two locations in the city, discounted same day tickets

This is the Hotel my gf and I stayed at when I went Oct 2001 just a month after 9/11. Went to see the play Rent (awesome) and went to The David Letterman Show. Had a great time.
