UPDATE: The deal, she is done, and it’s a minor league deal as Heyman reported last night. I presume this will lead to a lot of chatter, but really, he’s not going to be a factor any time soon. He hasn’t pitched all spring and the season starts in less than a week. It’s a depth move — potentially a smart one, depending on how he looks after he’s in baseball shape — but for not it’s of little consequence.
Thursday, 11:49 PM: From Jon Heyman of SI.com comes word that the Yankees are close to signing right-hander Kevin Millwood to a minor league contract.

Millwood, 36, had been holding out for a guaranteed big league roster spot, but it never came and spring training is now nearing it’s wrap-up stage.

Heyman says the contract is “incentive-laden,” meaning it is packed with around a million (or two) in performances-based bonuses. Those probably won’t click in, of course, if he’s not on the major league roster. And the Yanks are almost certain to send him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre initially.

Millwood is durable but he posted a 5.10 ERA in 31 starts last year for Baltimore, netting only four wins (if wins are your thing). We’ll call him insurance in case both Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia go down with injuries. That’s not completely out of the realm of possibility.

Yankees got Bartolo Colon, Freddy Garcia, and now Kevin Millwood. The Mets are looking smarter with their Chris Young and Chris Capuano signings. Is Colon gonna get a spot in the rotation?

I didn't know Omar Minaya worked for the Yankees. Now Kevin just needs a 30 million deal to ice it.

Minaya would only give him the max contract if he changes his name to Kevin Gonzalez.

Yankees are reminding me of the way the Red Sox used to operate. Get a whole bunch of flawed pitchers and hope for a miracle with one of them. Yankees may be forced to trade a lot of their young talent just to get a decent starter.

whatever happened to chad gaudin? lol.

I know it was a joke, but he's had a nice spring and is in the Nationals' bullpen for now. Just an FYI in case there were any Chad Gaudin fans around.

He won't cost much either since he probably only will spend limited time in NY. Maybe one of these guys works out ?

MIllwood playing for Red Sox?
By Mark J. Miller

Kevin Millwood(notes) has now had his name inserted into the annals of the never-ending rivalry between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.
The man who pitched a no-hitter back in 2003 for the Philadelphia Phillies has also pitched for the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers, and Baltimore Orioles since he entered the league way back in 1997. This offseason, the 36-year-old signed a minor-league deal with the Yanks, pitched three games, and then opted out of his contract on May 1.
Hall of Fame baseball writer Peter Gammons now reports that Millwood has joined the Boston Red Sox, which currently has both John Lackey(notes) and Daisuke Matsuzaka(notes) on the disabled list. Millwood, who has won 159 games and lost 137 in the course of his career, is being sent to Triple-A to play for the Pawtucket Red Sox, Gammons notes.
Last year, he started 31 games for the Baltimore Orioles and went 4-16 with a 5.10 ERA.
