It looks like DiceK has nothing left in his arm.

I think he will go to the pen first.

Kaz is pretty much toasty-o as well.

Heard a short interview on Rays radio today with Mark Gubicza, whose current gig is on Angels broadcast team.

He came as close as possible to saying that Kaz is just about history as a starter without actually saying it.

Another mediocre performance by DiceK tonight against a bad team.

Daisuke Matsuzaka

5 innings 6 hits 3 ER 3 BB 2K 96 pitches 5.40 ERA

The reason he will be demoted is he can't avoid the high pitch count. Won't have to worry about it in the bullpen.

I hope it's not DiceK. I purposely avoid watching his outings because they are so long and brutal to watch. Having the spectre of him hovering over Sox games is just too much....

Well, not the bullpen......but I bet it's more than 15 days before he makes another start

Angels LHP Scott Kazmir headed to DL with bad back

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP)—Los Angeles Angels left-hander Scott Kazmir(notes) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with tightness in his lower back.
The Angels recalled Matt Palmer(notes) late Friday night to start Saturday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, filling in for the struggling Kazmir.

After going 9-15 with a 5.77 ERA last year, Kazmir had a disastrous start to this season. He gave up five hits, five runs and two walks while hitting two batters and committing a balk in 1 2-3 innings against Kansas City last week.

Dice-K went 7 innings today, allowing 1 hit, 1 walk, and 0 runs. He's studly when he has his command.

Baseball of all the four major US sports can be the most conducive to streakiness. At times even the best players can slump eg. All Star Carl Crawford has had a terrible April and only recently has shown signs of coming out of a 20 game slump while on the other hand Sox backup SS Jed Lowrie has been the toughest out in the Red Sox lineup for the last two weeks..

Quality players however will generally end up with consistent numbers by season's end year after year until they grow to old to maintain their game. Just yesterday Mario Rivera blew a save that forced the Yankees to win in extra innings against the Orioles. Rivera who blew his second save in nine tries this month has been the most consistent closer in baseball for 15 years or so, the two blown saves in April matched his entire season total of 2009.

Derek Jeter is a great player and sure fire Hall of Famer (likewise Rivera) who may have lost a little of his greatness of late as he approaches his 37th birthday in June.

Jeter had a great year in 2009 hitting .334 slumped to .270 last year and is only hitting .257 do far this year with no homers yet (not that he is a power hitter, he hit 18 in 09 and 10 in 2010). Jeter is a liftime .313 hitter now in his 17th year as the only SS the Yanks have needed in that time. Rivera who is amazing turns 42 late this year.

Of course injuries often play a role in player performance. Take The Mets Jason Bey who left Boston for New York after the 2009 season. In 09 he hit 36 HRs with 119 RBI in 151 games, then in an injury plagued 2010 managed only 6 HRs and 47 RBI in 95 games.

The Red Sox lost key players to injury last year such as Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, Josh Beckett and Jacoby Ellsbury. Other teams also lost some of their best players to injuries as it is part of the game just like growing old is..David Ortiz and J.D. Drew are nearing the end of their long careers. A little trivia concerning Drew - in just over 1500 major leagues games J.D. has yet to be ejected by an umpire..I am not sure what the all time record for consecutive games is but 1502 is quite a number to never get tossed at least once during.

Kaz...
Speaking of MLB pitchers, Scott Kazmir will continue his rehab assignment with the Bees on the road trip, scheduled for his second rehab start on Sunday. Limited to a pitch count of 50, Kazmir (0-1, 32.40) worked 1.2 innings in his first rehab appearance, giving up six earned runs off of two hits, four walks and three strikeouts

JUNE 15, 2011

Scott Kazmir's downward spiral with the Angels finally ended Wednesday when the team gave him his unconditional release.

http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/news/story?id=6665950&campaign=rss&source=ESPNHeadlines

Kazmir, who had been placed on the disabled list after his first start of the season, was 9-15 with a 5.94 ERA last year. After spending more than a month at extended spring training to try to regain the form that made him one of the best young pitchers in the game a few years ago, Kazmir struggled miserably during his minor league rehab stint.

Angels general manager Tony Reagins happened to be at the most recent outing for Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday.
Kazmir was 0-5, allowed 30 runs in 15 1/3 innings and hit six batters in those five outings.

The Angels traded utility man Sean Rodriguez and two minor leaguers for Kazmir in August of 2009.

Kazmir, 27, led the American League in strikeouts in 2007, but he had lost all touch with his mechanics during his stay with the Angels.

His velocity dipped and he lost his once-devastating slider.

The Angels replaced Kazmir in their rotation with 21-year-old right-hander Tyler Chatwood. They had until June 22 to release Kazmir or return him to the active roster.
