All the baseball teams have 3 letter abbreviations that make sense (LAA = LA Angels, NYY= New York Yankees, etc)... except the San Diego Padres - their abbreviation is SDG. How do you get San Diego Padres from SDG??

If there was more than one MLB team in San Diego then it would be SDP, since there isn't it is SDG

Most sports abbreviations are three letter and "SDG" is used to make it distinct from "SAN" (used for Giants in MLB and Spurs in NBA)

Sharks in NHL are usually "SJO" and the 49ers is "SFO"

Because it's easier to recognize? Or maybe they just thought that SDP looked silly? I dunno.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are shorted as JAX...

LA and NY have 2 teams...they had to include the Angels, Dodgers, Yankees, Mets in it or there is no way to differentiate

if you have another San Diego baseball team I'm sure it becomes SDP and SD_
