Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards inked a contract to fight in two professional boxing matches, the Star-Tribune reported Wednesday.

Edwards' first pro fight will take place May 20 at Grand Casino Hinckley in Minnesota against a yet-to-be-named opponent.

"It's something I've always wanted to do in my life," the 26-year-old Edwards said Tuesday. "I can't put my eggs all in one basket, waiting for the NFL to settle the lockout. You never know when this lockout is going to end."
If the lockout continues, the 6-foot-5, 235-pound Edwards would fight again in June at the same casino. Before the lockout went into effect Edwards was unsigned, so his return to Minnesota is still up in the air.

Edwards, who incorporates boxing into his regular training regimen, became more serious about stepping into the ring over the past few years when the NFL appeared headed toward a lockout.

"There's always going to be people tell you that you can't do something," Edwards said. "It's up to you to make sure you prove them wrong by going out there and believing in yourself. I'm not trying to go out there just to say I tried it. I'm going out there trying to be the best."

Edwards, who starred in college at Purdue and has registered 29.5 sacks in his five-year career, joins Ravens safety Tom Zbikowksi as the second NFL player to pursue boxing amid the labor stalemate. Zbikowski won two fights last month and has another one scheduled for April 23.
