You are starting an MLB team from scratch... do you take Albert Pujols or Miguel Cabrera?

Pujols has been the better hitter and the much better defender, but Cabrera's seasons the last two years are just as good and he is 3 years younger. What say ye?

Neither! You start with a younger star, particularly a catcher like San Francisco's Buster Posey (2010 Rookie Of The Year). A catcher's responsibility is enormous in calling a game and when you get a good one that can also hit and is defensive gem, build the team around him IMHO.

Although I agree that going young is the way to go, would Posey really be the top pick? He doesn't put up huge offensive numbers like these guys and catchers have a limited shelf life. Unless I saw a young catcher putting up monster numbers, I'd go somewhere else personally.

Posey came up last May. Didn't even start the season with the Giants but rather in AAA in Fresno. Once with the Giants, he hit .305 with 406 AB and 18 HR, 23 2B, and 67 RBI's. He will be a consistent .300 hitter his entire career as he has a sweet swing and hits balanced to all fields. He is an exceptional catcher and has a cannon for an arm as he played shortstop in college as well. Johnny Bench even commented that he is the best young catcher he has seen in a generation and Bench was critical to making the Big Red Machine what it was! Posey was the key ingredient to the Giants winning the World Series last year. He managed the pitching staff impecably. Catchers are the quarterbacks of MLB teams.

Id start mine with Carlos Gonzalez. Real easy choice. And, if I could take a pitcher as well, give me King Felix

never start your team with Posey. He's not even in the top 20 in the league. Hanley or carlos gonzalez are soild players to start off.

i think pujols health will really be problem iin a few years so id say cabrera im sure his drinking problem is no worse than half the league he just has bud luck and gets caught

but if you start a team with anyone its got to be either cargo, tulo, or longoria i mean gold glove at their postion at top hitter at it too

so make that 500 AB...say 22 HR, 85 RBI...

miggy, hanley, cargo, pujols, cano put up .320+ 30homers 120 RBI and gold glove defense (besides miggy)

Is this a serious question? Nevermind the fact that Albert is twice the player Cabrera is, compare the 60 Minutes piece about Pujols with the trainwreck that Cabrera is off the field, and there is no case for taking Cabrera.

He's 3 years younger. That is a case alone for taking him...

Not even close! Cabrera. Pujols starting to make errors, and MAYBE has 3-5 years left before his motor skills begin to become more noticably weakened. A neurologist friend of mine, interestingly, was just mentioning this the other day. I really would not want to start with either of them. I'd prefer a younger up and coming star, and "roll the dice" with him! These two are near the twilight of their careers, certainly not the prime!

Troy Tulowitzki. I think they said he's hit 22 homers in his last 40 games going back to the end of last year. And he's 26 and a shortstop.

Since when does being drunk a few times qualify as a "trainwreck?" I guess Mickey Mantle's career was a trainwreck, then.

If Cabrera didn't play in Comerica National Park, his numbers would be gigantic.

If Cabrera was fully committed to baseball he would have a legit potential to be the best player that has ever lived.

Right now, i'd take Pujols to build a team around.

Pujols is about to be a free agent and asking for $30 million per year. Cabrera is already locked up for the next six years. That is a much bigger factor than the age. Just because the average career arc sees a decline at age 30 doesn't mean anything. Pujols has been an aberration his entire career

If I'm starting a franchise, I'm treating it more like a toy than a business, but still have to take the sure thing with Cabrera rather than go through the negotiations with Pujols
