MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota — National Football League owners and players representatives returned to court-ordered negotiations on Tuesday while a judge deliberated on whether or not to end an owners lockout.

After a three-day break, talks resumed with a court-ordered mediator in hopes of ending a labor deadlock as billionaire club owners and millionaire players argue over how to divide 9.1 billion dollars in annual revenues.

US District Court Judge Susan Richard Nelson, who ordered both sides back to the bargaining table, is expected to soon rule on whether or not the lockout owners imposed on players must be lifted, a move requested by the players.
Whichever way she rules, the losing side almost certainly will appeal to a court in St. Louis.

After 16 days of talks before a federal mediator in Washington failed, players filed an anti-trust lawsuit against the NFL to kick off the league's first work stoppage since 1987.

Among the star players pressing the players case are Super Bowl champion quarterbacks Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Drew Brees.

By pushing the contract fight into the courts, the sides have ensured a prolonged and protracted court fight with avenues to appeal at every turn.
With the planned start of the season about 4 1/2 months away, there is jeopardy the NFL might lose some or all of the 2011 season before a settlement is reached.

Owners wanted a greater slice of the revenues than the billion dollars they took off the top for expenses and a greater share of the remaining revenues while also pushing for an extension from 16 to 18 games per club in a season.

Players argued for the status quo, vowing not to take less money and play more games, and as a result the most popular American team sport risks losses in the fan support that created and sustains their sporting empire.
