MLB Online Betting – American League Baseball Betting Picks For The Week

Posted by Dale “Skip” Lalonde on 4/19/2011 3:27:39 PM

Online betting players who focus on baseball will see a few interesting matchups in the American League over the next few days, and you should see some excellent pitching along the way. Here is a look at a trio of matchups worth watching.
Yankees Blue Jays Betting – Tuesday, 7:07 PM ET

The Yankees are slight -108 favorites in Toronto as they kick off a three-game set, but that could be considered as a surprise as they give the ball to A.J. Burnett (3-0, 4.67), the former Blue Jay who has struggled at the Rogers Center since leaving Toronto. Burnett has lost all three of his starts north of the border since moving to New York, posting a 10.13 ERA at the Rogers Center, and the Yankees have lost seven of their last 10 in Toronto as a team. The Blue Jays will go with Kyle Drabek (1-0, 1.93), who has lost his lone start against the Yankees which came last year, but this is his first start at home in three outings. Drabek tossed a one-hitter in his first start of the 2011 season in Toronto, and he’ll want to limit his walks after throwing four base-on-balls in the each of the last two games.

New York may have Alex Rodriguez back in the lineup after he missed Sunday’s win over Texas, but the key to all of this is Burnett, who has never been a strong pitcher on the road in the first place, and he knows he’s going to get booed from the second he steps out of the dugout in Toronto on Tuesday. We don’t think he’ll get hammered on Tuesday night, but we’re going to give the edge to Drabek and the Blue Jays.

Angels Rangers Betting – Wednesday, 8:05 PM ET

This will wrap up a three-game set between American League West rivals, and the Rangers romped to a 7-1 win in Game 1 on Monday. On Wednesday, the Angeles will go with Jered Weaver (4-0, 1.30) who has been on fire to start the season and could be an MLB betting darkhorse for the Cy Young, although we should be careful as it is only April. Weaver is 7-4 in 20 career starts against the Rangers, posting a decent 3.43 ERA, but at the Ballpark, he is 1-4 in 10 starts with a 4.35 ERA. The Rangers will give the ball to Matt Harrison (3-0, 1.23), who was moved back to the rotation this season and is proving Texas correct in their decision. He is 2-1 in seven games (two starts) against the Angels with a 5.40 ERA, and this is Harrison’s start at home in three outings.

Weaver has struggled at the Ballpark, but the Rangers have cooled off since their hot start to the season, and we think the Angels will want to prove that they’re going to be right there with Texas all season when it comes to the West crown. Look for Weaver to put in another strong performance on Wednesday night.

Red Sox Angels Betting – Thursday, 10:05 PM ET

The Angels continue their tough week with a visit from the Red Sox, who will be coming off a two-game set in Oakland and were showing signs of life after taking three of four from the Blue Jays at home last weekend. The Red Sox will go with Josh Beckett (2-1, 1.80), who has pitched very well to start the season and more importantly, he looks healthy and has his swagger back. Beckett is 5-3 in eight starts against the Angels, posting a 4.41 ERA, and he has split four outings in Los Angeles with a 4.00 ERA. The Angels will counter with Tyler Chatwood (1-1, 3.75), who picked up the first win of his career in his last outing against the White Sox in Chicago, but he has to learn to be more confident in his off-speed stuff after feeding the White Sox with fastballs.

He’ll have his hands full going up against a resurgent Beckett, but the Red Sox, who have been slumping at the plate to begin with, have never seen him before, so it could take them a bit to get used to Chatwood. We’re going to give a slight edge to the Angels on Thursday in our sports betting picks.
