The Golden Nugget

129 East Fremont Street, Las Vegas

Well-appointed rooms in the new Rush Tower and a newly remodeled pool are among the attractions of the Golden Nugget hotel and casino, which is in downtown Las Vegas, adjacent to the Fremont Street Experience.

The ground floor wraps around a swimming pool, and the pool wraps around a shark and fish tank. An enclosed water slide travels through the tank. Guests don’t have to pay to use the chairs at the ground-level pool, but those around a smaller pool on the third level cost $10 or $20 a day.

The public areas of the hotel, including the elevators, reek of cigarette smoke. Like virtually every hotel in Las Vegas, parking is free. The eight restaurants include a steakhouse and a buffet.

My room - We stayed in the Rush Tower. The room was spacious, comfortable and attractively decorated in shades of brown, orange and gold. In addition to a king-size bed, the room featured a comfortable wraparound couch with ottoman and a desk/entertainment unit with flat-screen television. The view, however, was of a massive white pipe running just outside our fifth-floor window. Our room was handicapped-accessible; the bathroom was fitted with grab bars, but someone with limited mobility would have had trouble getting in and out of the deep tub/shower. The placement of a full-length mirror in front of the toilet seemed odd. All the rooms in Rush Tower are nonsmoking.

Pricing - Rates vary according to demand. For March, published midweek rates ranged from $59 for a basic room to $369 for a one-bedroom spa suite. The Rush Tower’s rooms were $89 a night. On weekend nights, basic rooms started at $149, with Rush Tower priced at $159. Internet access is $12.99 for 24 hours.

This brand-new resort glitters. A massive chandelier made with 2 million beaded crystals hangs over a three-level bar in the middle of the casino, and light panels illuminate the lobby and elevators with changing displays. Although smoking is permitted in the casino, the smell of cigarettes is faint.

Guests have access to three pools, including one overlooking the Strip, with their choice of a variety of comfortable loungers at poolside and in the shallow water. One of the pools is next to an outdoor entertainment area fitted with a bank of flat-screen TVs. The two fitness centers are well-appointed, with amenities that include a boxing ring. Spanish celebrity chef Jose Andres is affiliated with two of the 13 restaurants.

My room - We stayed in a terrace room with a view of the Strip. A half-wall divided the bedroom from a sitting area with a wraparound couch, desk and coffee table. A small kitchen area included a microwave, sink, dishwasher and refrigerated minibar, but no available refrigerator space. Coffee for the provided espresso machine was $5 from the minibar.

The light-filled space was painted white with splashes of royal blue, and a variety of art books were arranged on the tables. The room had two flat-screen TVs, one opposite the bed and one opposite the couch. The spacious bathroom included a large shower, whirlpool tub and drawers to hold our toiletries.

Pricing - Rates change according to demand. For March, published midweek rates ranged from $200 to $240 a night. Weekend rates were $280 to $580. Free Internet access is available.
