GARY, Ind. — Police have found two bodies buried in a 10-foot-high pile of horse manure at a stable in Gary, Ind.

Police Cpl. Mike Barnes said a man getting on his horse saw what he thought was a dead body — an arm protruding from the pile — and called the authorities, according to reports.

Investigators on Sunday found a body wrapped in plastic and then saw a foot sticking out of another part of the pile, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
The Sun-Times said early Tuesday that the two bodies were identified as white or Hispanic men.

"We're not sure which, but we know for sure they're not black," Barnes said.
"It was the biggest pile of (manure) I have ever seen," Barnes said, according to the Chicago Tribune. "They've been putting it back there for years."
The Lake County Coroner's Office made a preliminary finding of homicide, the Tribune said.

It wasn't immediately clear who the people were or how they died. Autopsies revealed the causes of death but authorities did not release the information because of concerns it would harm the investigation, The Northwest Indiana Times reported.

According to media reports one man was described as being between 5 feet 10 inches tall and 6 feet tall and weighing about 200 pounds; the other was described as being about 5 feet 6 inches tall.

Police also found some bones in the pile, but they are believed to be horse remains.
