Simple question: what has been your longest commute for a job? How many days a week? How long did you do the commute for before you went mad? What helped you through it?

Quick rundown: I'm graduating college and my buddy can get me an interview for a position that starts at 35K and after 6 months will bump to 40K. It's a position I only need for a year or two (before graduate school).

Problem: The morning and nightly commute would range anywhere from an hour and ten to minutes to an hour and forty minutes. Monday through Friday.

I'm not going to move to the city because I enjoy paying the rent I do now and really like my current situation. That said, no other job I've applied to or gotten interviews for, are within 5K of what I'd start at.

I'm sure. Now I am looking for options to park outside of Pittsburgh and take the tram or bus or whatever the fuck it is and travel in that way. If I can avoid city traffic, I could easily drive an hour in the AM and PM.

So any 'Burgh residents, any input would be appreciated

And thanks dsethi

I drove over 2000 miles last month...usually drive at least 2-3 hrs 4 days a week...honestly I enjoy driving as long as I have sports radio...I try not to let gas prices ruin my day(s)

i've never done more than a 30min commute for either of the 2 jobs i held for 5+ years... I had one commute that was ~1hr and couldn't stick with it. as said above, losing that time really wears on you.

Longest..about an hour one way - that was for a summer during college. Now it is about 10 minutes to the office.

I, too, actually enjoy driving. Cup of coffee, good music, and a couple cigarettes and I'm doing good. I did some research and what seems to be ideal is drive from Morgantown, WV to South Hills Village, 10 miles south of Pittsburgh and depending on traffic would be 45-60 minutes in the car. That, I think I could do. Then from there, take the tram in which is 20-25 minutes and will take me, literally, to the door of the building I'd be working.

I think it would be spending 25-40 minutes in my car in stand-still traffic that would be what would ruin me. But if I'm actually MOVING, an hour to me seems like nothing. Again, It's a good 10-15K over any other entry level positions I've applied to. I've worked out my finances (including my current rent) and I only need about 12K to live. This job would allow me to pay off a big 20-25K chunk of school loans and considering I owe just shy of 90K, that could be HUGE.

Also, I don't do much on weeknights anyway except exercise and then watch TV. As long as I didn't lose my weekends where I'm constantly busy, losing 2-3 hours on a weekday, to me anyway, doesn't seem all that important.

I used to commute 400 miles one way to Camp Pendleton when I was in the Reserves. Had another guy in my unit that would fly in from Ohio.

Was that like one weekend a month or something though?
yeah it was but try getting off of your regular job then driving 7 hours just in time to be in formation once a month.
I did this for 6 years.

maybe you would be better keeping the job in motown and taking a 5k difference in pay....1. you save your time 2-3 hrs a day.....2. you would spend a ton in gas driving so it would be close to offsetting the difference in price per jobs....

well we didn't have to be in the unit we were in. The guy that flew in was the head US Marshals as his regular job. There were only 2 units that did what we did and the other one was in DC. I chose to move that far away, but I wouldn't change it for anything. We deployed once a year and got to do some pretty cool shit.
