It was far from a normal Monday night on the diamond.

One day after President Obama announced the death of world terrorist Osama bin Laden, Major League Baseball came together to honor the brave men and women in the armed forces who got us there. The Washington Nationals debuted their special stars-and-stripes uniforms while the San Diego Padres donned their camouflage that's usually only reserved for Sundays. In the New York Yankees clubhouse, players talked about 9/11 and justice while the New York Mets announced 4,000 free tickets for military members for Tuesday's game. The Los Angeles Dodgers said their free ticket offer would last the entire month of May at Dodger Stadium.

The coolest tribute, however, came at Fenway Park when David Ortiz(notes) lifted a seventh-inning pitch into the seats above the Green Monster and came home to celebrate the two-run homer with the group of military members that was sitting next to the Boston Red Sox dugout.

The soldier in the picture above is Army Ranger Sgt. Lucas Carr. The South Boston native threw out the first pitch before the Red Sox's 9-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels and also led the crowd in chants of U-S-A! U-S-A! during the game.

Later, the man they call Big Papi treated him to Fenway's version of the Lambeau Leap because of an encounter the pair experienced earlier in the game.

Ortiz said the soldier gave him a patch from the uniform of a buddy that "went down" after the slugger walked back earlier in the game.

"Maybe it was good luck," he said, smiling.

All in all, a very cool moment. This screencap alone brings goosebumps.

-Ortiz became the fifth player to hit 300 home runs in a Red Sox uniform when he belted a two-run shot into the Monster seats in the fourth inning. Only Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, Jim Rice and Dwight Evans are ahead of Ortiz. It was Ortiz’ ninth homer of the season and 142nd at Fenway Park, tying him with Manny Ramirez for sixth on the ballpark’s all-time home run list.

Btw # 358 on the career...

all of those are probably true. His family was probably living in poverty, however. I'll give him a pass there.

As for papi as a person, baseball couldn't have a better personality. A true humble class act.

Another classy thing he did last night, thumbs up for papi..

27 game hit streak== no lie

David Ortiz got one of the hits off Diamond, a leadoff single in the second that stretched his hitting streak to 27 games, a run that began before he sustained a season-ending injury in August. He has at least one hit in all 15 games he's played this season.

How does he walk away after this kind of season? How does Boston let him retire after this season?

His body must be telling his brain it is time to move on. He will leave a huge void in Sox lineup.

Amazing career. Absolute big game beast. Steroids, hgh, whatever....he is an all time great.

+1

greatest clutch hitter in my lifetime no doubt.

Anyone who says clutch hitting is bogus, including is own manager, is cookoo.
yeah Papi puts any talk of clutch being bogus to bed....what people who do not watch the Red Sox regularly may fail to understand is the amount of times he has come thru in the clutch...sure they know about the big playoff ones, but how many times on a tuesday night in June, etc.

King of clutch. Period.

Remember when they brought him in from Minnesota. He wasn't even a starter. But every chance he got he was smacking game winning hits, mostly homers, and a lot of them to left field. Eventually they had to make him a starter and he just kept on hitting BIG hits, intragame and end of game.

Red Sox fans have been blessed to watch Papi over his career. Any true fan knows what he has done. Amazing is an understatement. Right up to this, probably the greatest retirement year of all time in Baseball.

Did I say the guy was amazing.

Yes he's having a great year but if he retires now he would end up having one of if not the greatest final seasons in the history of baseball. And that would be a very cool thing.

Much better to retire like that then to retire like arod.

Cannot think of a better "last season" in baseball. Anyone even close?
I'm thinking Papi is gonna take Archer deep in the 1st inning tonight.
