It isn’t just that Derek Jeter is hitting .250. It isn’t just that he has two extra-base hits (both doubles) this year. It isn’t just that he’s coming off by far the worst year of his career.

Look at the breakdown of Derek Jeter’s 26 hits this year:

Infield singles: 11
Ground balls through left side: 2 (one a double)
Ground balls up middle: 4
Ground balls through right side: 3 (one a double)
Looper to right field: 2
Line drives: 4

We’re only talking about 116 plate appearances, and as Jeter says, a couple of four-hit games and he’s right back in it. But look at that collection of hits. Almost half of Derek Jeter’s all-too-rare hits were infield singles. Only six of the 26 were hit in the air.

Media is blowing it up. He's not washed up, but also isn't the player he used to be. Middle of the pack ss right now.

If this is a big enough sample so that Jeter will continue at his current pace it may even be worse than when Pete Rose was going for 4,000 hits batting .264 with an anemic Slg. Pct. of .319. I think Jeter's slugging avg currently is .269 thats as bad as it gets!

Tough to watch him struggle at the plate. If it was anyone else he would be moved to the bottom of the order but Girardi cant do that yet. If he's still hitting .250 at the all-star break I think he's gotta be moved.

With that line-up they can hide him a bit but they need some production from him. What concerns me more than his bat is where you put him in the field. He cant play short much longer, cant move him to 3rd or 1st. He's not hitting well enough to DH and I cant see him bumping Gardner in left field

I think they're stuck with him at short hitting .260 for the remaining 2.5 years of his contract

agree, and he's the face of the franchise, so they can live with avg. numbers for awhile...its not like he's 0 for 30 or something........

He'll wind up .280 or better.
He looked 25 years ago again today, he had a solid road trip.

I wish Zit would do more of these Yankee hating threads.
Last year in in the beginning of May he did a Teixeria thread, and he wound up almost winning the MVP.

THE CAPTAIN HIT TWO BOMBS!!!!!

reminds me of 2006-2007 here when aspiring young RF John Gomes would hit a couple HRs each month, make a couple of diving catches in the outfield (due to being stocky & slow) and punch out some third string Yankee infielder in a spring training brawl - leading many locals to rave about what a Hard Worker he was and boy we could sure use a couple more guys like him and oh yeah by early 2008 his career BA was .206.

(to his credit, the young lad burped out one pretty solid season with the Reds in 2010 to score a pretty nice phat extended contract, by George, but now back to being a sub .200 hitter and single handedly quashing Reds offensive rallies day after day with a big sweeping swinging KO)

Water usually finds it's proper level, especially when it's old water trying to compete with younger, faster, stronger water.

File THAT one for your Axioms of the Year contest
