A Texas high school teacher has been placed on administrative leave following an incident where he allegedly told a 9th grade Muslim girl in his algebra class "I bet that you're grieving" on Monday following the death of Osama bin Laden.
According to one parent at Clear Brook High School in Houston who spoke about the incident to a local ABC affiliate, the teacher also said, "I heard about your uncle's death."

The parent said the student "understood that he was referring about Osama bin Laden being killed and was racially profiling her."

The name of the alleged victim of the comment has not been released. She is being described as an "American-born girl of Muslim faith."

The teacher allegedly showed no remorse after Muslim girl reacted to his comments, according to the parent (who requested anonymity from the ABC station because "she doesn't want any retaliation against her daughter or the girl who experienced the inappropriate comment.")

"The student ended up crying over what was said to her by the teacher and the teacher asked her why she was crying and another student said it was because of what you said earlier," the parent told the station. "And his response was, oh, OK, and just kind of smirked and giggled and walked away."

The Houston Chronicle reports the unidentified teacher "has been placed on administrative leave" following the alleged remark. The Chronicle published this official statement from the school district:
In the Clear Creek Independent School District, we believe diversity strengthens our community and seek opportunities to celebrate the different cultures within our schools and neighborhoods. The sentiments allegedly shared by this teacher are not reflective of the staff at Clear Brook High School or anyone within the Clear Creek Independent School District. In accordance with CCISD policy, the teacher has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of a personnel investigation. The student did the right thing and immediately notified an adult regarding the teachers' comments. The principal at Clear Brook High School notified the child's parents and has been in communication with the family.
The alleged incident in Texas is just the latest in a short string of small incidents targeting American Muslims following the death of bin Laden. A mosque in Portland, ME was vandalized in what police there are calling a hate crime and a Muslim unity rally was canceled in Portland, OR after organizers feared reprisals from both non-Muslims upset over terrorism and Muslims who organizers said might be angry by an event that supported the killing of bin Laden.

Maybe he was joking but we weren't there to know if he was joking around and the muslim girl misread the situation.

Had to be the case..... The guy isn't THAT stupid.... He was probably laughing when he said it thinking the girl would be smart enough to laugh it off too.

It's kind of like if I'm African-American and I'm walking with 2 Caucasian friends, and a black homeless man trips and falls on the curb or something like that, and they push me in the shoulder while pointing and laughing saying "Look Hache your uncle just busted his azz"

Unfortunately as a teacher he has to be smart enouh to know that you can't do ANYTHING these days with these kids and get away with it.

I can tell that many of you guys have not had that many TRUE interracial friendships throughout life...

Ok so you're blaming the kid instead of the teacher being a dumb fuck?

Nooooo..... But she saw an opportunity and seized it even though she knows deep down he was just goofing with her.

He was stupid for saying it I explained that.
School isn't like it used to be when most of us used to still get paddlings.
You can't say or do anything to these kids today.
Actually none of us can in general.

This is no different than some of the sports broadcasters who have uttered things they weren't serious about and got fired for...

We don't know if he was joking. Only other students that were there can tell us.

Unless he woke up with his mind made up that he was going to commit suicide that day (as in his job), then he was joking.

None of us here are stupid enough to say anything like that to a student these days and think we are going to get away with it, so a teacher who knows first hand that working around these kids nowadays is like walking on eggshells, definitely isn't going to unless he's just goofing around....

I see where you're going /w this Hache, but it's not a friendship - its a teacher and student - and a 9yr old student at that.
I do agree that among friends, stuff like that is the norm much of the time. I often pull a "I didn't know your dad shops here" when homeless guys come in my store, because I know certain employees are cool about joking like that - but I also know some don't have that type of relationship with me.
