Churchill Downs: Jockey Michael Baze found dead in stable area
By Marty McGee

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Michael Baze, the leading jockey at Arlington Park last summer and a member of the famed Baze riding family of the western United States, was found dead Tuesday afternoon in his vehicle in the stable area of Churchill Downs. He was 24.

A Louisville Metro Police spokeswoman, Alicia Smiley, said Tuesday evening that police have undertaken an investigation into the death. Churchill spokesman John Asher said track officials were not at liberty to comment on the death.

Bobby Kelly, whom Baze had recently hired as his agent, said he tried to call and text Baze all morning but got no response. Kelly said backstretch workers informed him that Baze apparently had been in his vehicle in the same spot all morning before someone called 911 and emergency workers found Baze dead in the vehicle later in the day.

Louisville Metro police said the body of jockey Michael Baze, 24, was discovered inside his vehicle in the stable area at the track at Churchill Downs about 4:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Churchill Downs workers informed Baze's agent that the jockey apparently been in his vehicle in the same spot all morning before someone called 911.
Baze won the Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar in 2007 aboard Salute the Sarge. He also won the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes in 2008 on Georgie Boy.

Baze also won the riding title at Chicago's Arlington Park in 2010 and was already nearing the 1,000 career wins benchmark.

Baze came from a family with deep roots in thoroughbred racing. His father and uncle were jockeys. Jockey Tyler Baze is his cousin and U.S. Racing Hall of Fame member Russell Baze, who owns the record for most wins in North American racing history, is his father's first cousin.

Churchill Downs' John Asher said a promising career was cut short much too soon.

"Racing is a tight-knit family," he said. "It's kind of like running off to join the circus. Thoroughbred racing you have a circuit all year long. You travel from track to track. Whether it's the jockeys' room or working out horses in the morning, you have relationships with trainers and owners. It's a very close-knit family. When you suffer a loss in that family, it is very, very painful."

An autopsy is scheduled Wednesday, but police said foul play is not suspected.

Alcohol was a demon for him. He failed the breathalyzer at Oaklawn and was taken off his mounts. As can be expected ,plenty of rumors flying around about other issues.

There was a good reality show on the Animal Planet a while back called Jockeys. And it really showed what these guys had to go through to maintain their low weight. And many would resort to anything including drugs to keep it down. Not saying that had anything to do with his death. But these jockeys put their bodies through hell to keep their weight off.

Prairie Meadows jockey held on drug charges

Jockey Ramsey Zimmerman was arrested in Des Moines, Iowa, on Monday morning and charged with four felonies, including possession and intent to deliver crack cocaine and heroin. Police discovered Zimmerman in an unresponsive state while operating a motor vehicle. Zimmerman, 29, is being held in the Polk County, Iowa, Jail.
According to his agent, Kenny Washburn, Zimmerman was supposed to visit family in Chicago on Sunday and return to work Monday morning.
Zimmerman, who finished in a tie for the 2010 riding title at Prairie Meadows, had four wins in 35 mounts through the first 11 days of the current meet. His racing license has been suspended by the Prairie Meadows stewards.
Zimmerman was suspended in 2005 for substance abuse problems while riding in Illinois but was reinstated after completing a rehabilitation program.
