I don't think he will win another major and by January next year, I believe he will fall out of the top 5. He has reached the stage that so many others hit and then just fall off the cliff. If he is smart 2012 will be his last year on tour.

Arguably the greatest ever, but now Raffa and Nole will be competing for every Major.

what's wrong with not being top 5 but still contending for majors? he played well vs. Nadal last time out, just didn't capitalize on 3rd set opportunities. Could argue he's just not as intimidating as he has been in the past but no reason to believe he can't go on a run in a major. We've been spoiled by how unreal he's been in the past. Hope he wins another major and anytime he enters the field I think he will be a threat. You almost have to wonder if, as his ranking drops and expectations are lowered, he starts to compete better at majors without a lot of the pressure he's had for so many years to win every event he enters.

Nothing wrong with being out of the top 5, but just like you are seeing with Jeter and so many other athletes, they hit a certain age and then nose dive. It happened to Pete when he lost to Hewitt at the US Open.

Roger is now being challenged by players that would lucky to win a set off of him. Nothing wrong with it. Unless he goes Bonds, Clemens and Armstrong and juices, he will eventually become a former great champion.

I'd be absolutely stunned if he fell out of the top 5 within a year, if he stays healthy, which has never been a problem for him.

Soderling and Berdych have way too many points to defend to surpass Federer. Ferrer playing perhaps the best tennis of his life and will almost inevitably slow down when the clay court season is over. I don't see any of them bypassing Federer. The only player outside the top 10 that did have a legitimate threat of being a top 5 player by January is Del Potro, who is now injuried and will miss the FO and perhaps Wimbledon.

Federer is definitely on the decline, but he could still win another slam if the draw favors him and he gets a little bit of luck. He is still by far the 3rd best player on the tour right now, and it's not even close.

I'm glad my boy bigtendominator was wrong on this.. This was a logical conclusion to his career though. I'm sure Federer himself saw these new guys coming into take over... But,what a class act ! Now he is 3 majors ahead of Tiger, good weekend for Federer to text Tiger he has another major, a weekend where Tiger missed the cut.

Red Eye,

I was dead wrong on this one. I just did not expect him to turn back the clock. He is still the Master.

Class act by you in man-ing up and not running away to hide like so many others do-and you weren't exactly the Lone Ranger in your opinion. I thought he might be able to squeak out one more major somewhere along the line, but never dreamed he'd ever regain the top spot...

Dafinch,

I appreciate your comments, but never understood people who can't own up to their errors.
