So I got an 8gb nano for my birthday. I used to have a nano and lost it. Anyway, I've never fully understood this about itunes.

Can't I put like 30gb of music inside itunes and then choose what I want my ipod to synch with or not IN AN EASY WAY? I know you can click your ipod's name prior to synch (as opposed to Library click on HarryCaray's pod, for example), and then you can checkbox album by album or artist by artist what you want to synch, but that is SUPER tedious. When you import an album, and are within the library, you can uncheck the lil' box next to each song, but that just dictates whether or not the song plays when you play your library on your computer; the pod still tries to synch with it even when that box is unchecked.

I was thinking about putting the stuff I want in itunes but not on my pod in a weird genre, and unchecking that genre's box in the "what to sync" area of "HarryCaray's pod". Then if I want to circulate an album out and another in, I can just change the genre of the two albums...

Am I making this way too difficult?

You need to make a playlist of what you want on your NANO if you dont want all the contents of itunes on your nano or if you have more content on itunes then your nano can handle.

Once you make the playlist that you want synced to the nano you have to check on Itunes that you only want that playlist sent to the nano

Itunes is the worst thing ever made for people to try and figure out and don't understand why they haven't come up with something simpler for those who are good or experienced at these types of things.

Hopefully Chop helped you about Harry...

There are other more simple options, but he asked me about ITUNES

I thought about that but I actually like to use the playlists for custom playlists within what is synched...like "car tunes" or "poker music" or whatever. Can I still use those fractional playlists and then have one master playlist that is my "sync list" from my library? So any tune that is in a custom fractional playlist is gonna be listed twice, once in the "main" playlist and once in the smaller playlist in which it is listed.

Also, when you do the playlist thing and select "playlist" from the nano, it's not sorted all nicely by artist and then album...it's just a hodgepodge of the songs. I know it's in the order in which you put them in itunes, but the navigateability is shitty.

I'm thinking the genre thing might work better. It's basically the same thing but preserves me the playlist option for its true intention. Just seems like there should be a better way.

Ok now I understand your original question.
If you want to prevent certain things from going on your nano, there is a check box besides each song and playlist.
Just put a check mark besides anything you dont want synced and then go to settings, you will find an option that says do not sync checked items.

yes it takes a while to check everything you dont want, but the boxes will stay checked until you uncheck them. You only have to do this once. So from then on out your NANO will not sync anything you have checked

That sounds more reasonable...where are these checkboxes? I see the one checkbox that dictates whether or not it plays when you play your library...but I don't see this second checkbox.

TIA

Ahhhh I think I see it. It's the same check box but you have to go to your ipod settings and find the "only synch checked items" checkbox.

Why even sync it all? Like why not just drag and drop what you want on the ipod. I mean you just click the first title, then shift+click to the group of songs you want. Works easy enough for me

Create a dummy playlist --- something like List2011. Then add all your songs to List2011.

This will take some time --- but once you have a "dummy" playlist, you can just add/delete songs from the playlist.

Another tip --- change your settings so that iTunes will convert to 128 kbps when syncing to iPod.

More than likely, you're not going to notice the difference between 128 and 192 and 320 kbps. Especially if you're listening with $15 Walmart earbuds.

Converting to 128 kbps should give you the extra space for dozens/hundreds of songs.
