I haven't bought a new car for many yrs. My Daughter is looking @ a VW Jetta Diesel, or a Suburu Forrester/Outback. She lives in upstste NY, & has a small child. Concerns, safety, winter driving & mileage. I've never owned or even driven a diesel. Any pros or cons, from anyone?

diesels are very tough in cold weather. as a minimum one should
have a plug in block heater and really should have a heated
garage. if not, i would pass on buying a diesel. also in cold
weather, synthetic oil for gas engines is very beneficial.

The VW diesel gets great mileage - 50mpg I think. The new "clean" diesel technology is much better than the diesels back in the 80's & 90's. Diesels are a much simpler design than internal combustion. If you take care of it a diesel will last 500k miles. VW's however have a bad reputation for quality problems. Go to Edmunds.com and read the VW forums.

Subaru's are a very high quality vehicle. They are one of only 2 companies in the world using the "horizontally opposed" engine design - the other company is Porsche. Their engines are built by Fuji who also make engines for jet aircraft. Has a good rep for safety also. If she gets a lot of snow you should consider a 4wd.
