House OKs Chicago casino, slots at O'Hare, Midway

SPRINGFIELD -- A major gambling package won House approval today with provisions for a land-based casino in Chicago or a riverboat gambling palace on Lake Michigan, four more casinos around the state, and slot machines at racetracks and Chicago’s two airports.

If the plan makes it through the Senate and gets the governor's signature, it would be Illinois' biggest expansion of gambling in the more than two decades since the original riverboat gambling bill passed.

Supporters estimate the proposal would generate $1.4 billion in one-time upfront fees operators pay based on the number of positions they have. Estimates are to $500 million a year in tax revenue. That money would be distributed to education, public works projects and local governments.

The House voted 65-50, with two members voting present, in favor.

It's expected to pass the senate today. Mayor of Chicago really wants this to pass but the governor doesn't like this bill, will he sign it? The future of racing in Illinois basically hinges on this.

If betting on Sports were legal and easy to do, would it somehow become less attractive to some folks?

I can see what you mean boat but I don't think that would ever be the case with this subject.

Look back years ago when there were no issues and Paypal & Neteller existed to transfer money with ease.
It was booming...

One day the buffoons in the United States Govt. will realize they can make a lot of money for themselves by passing it...

SPRINGFIELD --- Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn today said he'll have to review a massive gambling expansion bill before deciding whether to sign or veto it, reiterating concerns that it's "top heavy."

"I have told the legislators over and over again, the people of Illinois do not want an excessive gambling bill that's top heavy," Quinn said. "I think there are parameters that if they were followed" would allow the state to do this in a proper way.
"Once the General Assembly got this subject, it got more and more top heavy," Quinn said. "We've got to make sure the people come first....If they are in any way harmed by this particular legislation, I won't approve it."

Quinn did not say he would veto the measure, nor did he say he would sign it. He talked about how he wanted to hear what "the people" think, that he wants every provision, including some that were added at the last minute, to come out and be considered by the public.
"I think the people of Illinois agree with me that" they don't want an "excessive" gambling.

Quinn also said he has met with new Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel about the plan, which includes a Chicago casino. Quinn said he talked with Emanuel about 10 days ago in Chicago about 15 issues or so. Quinn said he told Emauel he supports a Chicago casino but worried about the gambling push getting "excessive."

Probably do for the tracks what it did in Indiana, which is bankrupt them! They should close the tracks, or give them a purse enhancement for 3 day a week racing, the only one that is going to win in this case is the state collecting millions in fees for gaming spaces.

I always agree on following the money, especially in Chicago. Do you think people will gamble more when the Horseshoe Casino is only 20 minutes away on the Indiana state line? Its more about keeping the dollars in-state.
