Jim Tressel resignation: Who should be Ohio State's next long-term football coach? Poll

Urban Meyer, now an ESPN analyst, retired as Florida's coach following last season, after leading the Gators to the 2006 and 2008 national titles.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Jim Tressel's resignation as Ohio State's football coach is already, naturally, leading to speculation about who the university will hire as his long-term replacement.

It's already started, in fact. The Bodog Sportsbook has placed odds on some of the coaches it anticipates will be Ohio State coaching candidates.

Luke Fickell, a former OSU standout defensive lineman who has been working as a co-defensive coordinator for Tressel, will be the Buckeyes' interim head coach in the upcoming 2011 season.

That assignment gives Fickell himself a chance to become a legitimate candidate to win a multi-year contract as the Ohio State boss. The university says it will conduct a search for the next coach after the season.

The Buckeyes' coaching job figures to be one of the most highly-sought positions in recent college football history, even if the program is levied major penalties by the NCAA for the scandal that prompted Tressel's resignation.

Candidates may include not only those with impressive college resumes, but also coaches who have flourished in the NFL.

Gruden was one of the first people I thought of when the job came open. He's got a good offensive mind, he communicates very well with both the media and the players. He would make a hell of a recruiter. He's an Ohio boy. And he's got a clean slate..I think Urban Meyer takes the job. But Gruden would be my second choice. You can forget about Bob Stoops. He's not going anywhere. And I doubt it gets as far down as Pelini. Mark Stoops might not be a bad choice if he's a chip of Bob Stoops block and not Mike Stoops block.

If they get hit with as stiff of penalties as I think they will, they might have to resort to interviewing RX posters for the job.

Yes, choptalk at 3.5 to 1 is better value then 3 to 1 on Gruden.
