Arizona Diamondbacks set record on path to first place in NL West
by Jim Gintonio on May. 30, 2011, under Arizona Republic Sports
The Diamondbacks not only took a big step toward turning their season around as they moved into first place in the National League West, they also set a major-league record. They became the first team in history to gain sole possession of first place in their league or division (since 1969) during May after entering the month with a deficit of at least 61/2 games.
Manager Kirk Gibson said the recent road trip (6-1), which began with a 12-4 drubbing in Colorado, was “great.” He was happy that many players contributed but senses the team can keep getting better.
“There’s nothing figured out here, it’s a work in progress,” Gibson said. “We’ve played well, yet we’ve been fortunate the way it’s all come together and as quickly as this team has come together. We have to fight to continue to try and get better. There are a lot of things that . . . . we’re not even close to where we I see us being or where we can be.
“We’re home this week and we’ll work on several things, try to clean some things up and get better at them and make sure our timing and communication is better than it has been. We’ve been successful with the result, as I look at it, and as the coaches look at it. . . . We realize there were some things we were pretty fortunate on. I think as we get further into the season, I think our expectation would be that we never have that.”
Gibson liked the team’s resiliency on the road trip after the lopsided loss. “That was huge, but again we’re here with the Marlins now, and we have to be humble, and we have to be scared that we get sloppy and not continue to play that way.”
