There may not even be an NFL season in 2011, but Bengals owner Mike Brown can still boost ticket sales by making one offseason move — hire Jim Tressel.
The disgraced and now jobless former Ohio State University head coach would be a huge draw in southwest Ohio, where the Buckeye fan base is overwhelming and often blindingly loyal.
Let’s face it, Marvin Lewis isn’t selling any tickets these days. In fact, Lewis is likely costing the Bengals many disenchanted season-ticket holders who are tired of his act.
In the NFL, Tressel wouldn’t have to report players for selling their bling and getting free cars.
Making money is king in the NFL and criminal activity is overlooked as long as you perform on the field.
Sweater Vest can even bring some of his current and former players to Paul Brown Stadium and open a tattoo parlor in one of the luxury suites.
Given Mike Brown’s love for OSU, Tressel could probably get him to change uniform colors. He could also start putting little Tiger stickers on the helmets of the players when they make a big hit.
Maybe Tressel could lobby the NFL to allow him to pad his schedule with Kent State, Ohio University and Little Sisters Of The Poor to guarantee some wins.
The idea of Tressel coaching the Bengals or any other NFL team may seem like a fantasy, but would you really put anything past the owner of the Bengals?
