After closure, everything must go at Sahara casino

PUBLISHED FRIDAY, JUN. 03, 2011

LAS VEGAS -- Now that the Sahara hotel-casino is closed in Las Vegas after 59 years, everything must go.

The owners of the Rat Pack-era casino are planning a liquidation sale of all items inside the property exactly one month after closing the casino's doors.

Things for sale include the casino's poker room sign, bedroom furnishings and chandeliers in several shapes and sizes.

The sale set to begin June 16 is being organized by Ohio-based National Content Liquidators, a firm that ran previous liquidation sales for other casinos.

Company spokeswoman Meredith Lunsford says she expects the sale to attract nostalgic fans and commercial buyers interested in things like escalators and restaurant equipment.

Owner SBE Entertainment has not yet detailed its plans for the property on the north end of the Las Vegas Strip.

Boy can I tell you stories about things that happened at the Sahara. Used to be my hangout from '95-'97.

Liquidation Sale Starts at the Sahara

Story posted 2011.06.16 at 04:36 PM PDT
LAS VEGAS -- The Sahara Hotel and Casino may be closed, but now you can take some of it home for a price. The Sahara liquidation sale could take up to two months, but earlier Thursday, a line stretched all around the property.

It calmed down, but at one point there was an eight hour wait to get inside. Some of those people who waited just wanted some of the old Las Vegas.

"That's what its all about, the camel, you know. So we had to get those right away and we're just snooping to see what other little tidbits we need," said Frankie Chase.

Chase lives in Las Vegas and says she's been coming to the Sahara since she was 21. But there's more than just tidbits for sale here -- poker tables, $10,000 escalators, theater equipment and stage lighting are just some of the things available.

"The things that are really interesting are the pictures, and the price is reasonable so that's our next run," she said.

Celebrities like Johnny Carson, Tina Turner, and Dean Martin all performed at the Sahara.

The fire sale is expected to attract nostalgic fans and commercial buyers, and while an escalator might go for $10,000, there's plenty of flatware available for just $1. So there is a big price range, it just depends on what you want.

For the first few days, there's a $10 admission. After that, there's no cost to get inside. The sale continues daily 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
