From my experience:

Best rents are never advertised. People who advertise their rentals tend to want premium dollars.

The way I look for a place to rent in CR: Drive around the areas you'd like to rent in, look for signs, ask people in the area/guards. You can generally find something that is 10-25% cheaper than anything advertised with this method, although it takes some work.

Thanks for the help, I actually already found the place I was looking for on www.zucaes.com. Ironically enough, the house I took was the only listing on that site that I could afford and it was perfect for me. The guy Daniel and his son Esteban are super easy to deal with, they even helped me talk the owner down on his price as well as got me three weeks free so I could have time to paint and not rush the move. I highly recommend this company.

That's exactly what I used to do in the U.S., find the area I want to live in and then drive around looking for signs.

I don't know why I've never considered doing that here... although perhaps because almost every area I would want to live in is behind guarded gates. Is driving around looking for a rental a valid excuse to get in?

And also perhaps because driving around randomly here is dangerous. You can be in a good area, take a bad turn, and be in a very dangerous area. I ended up in Alajuelita looking for Hater's BBQ. Although I suppose that's good to know before you move into said good area unknowingly, supposing you don't get car jacked to learn it.

Yes, in fact the guarded gates are the best, since you just ask the guard, they always know if there is a place for rent within. A lot of times the guard's windows are covered in for rent or for sale signs.

I've even had it happen that the guard lets me know that a tenant will leave in x period of time and to check back then.

But then again, I look relatively non-threatening and have gone house hunting with my girl. If you pulled up in a '87 Hyundai with tinted windows, 3 guys in the back, blasting music and smoking a joint, you might get a different reaction.

I like to pick where I want to live first, then find a place in the area I like.

Also, in my experience, you get a good 20%+ discount compared to advertised rates. Once people go to the hassle of advertising, they understandably will have greater demand for their rental property and adjust the price accordingly.

I agree, I've hear a lot of complaints re: Karina and Tropic is a full scam. Not sure what kind of call center they're running but it sure as hell isn't real estate. I can help you find a new rental; PM me or email kristinm_wilson@yahoo.com.

This is my site and it has some ok stuff on there but i'll be the first to tell you that there isn't much for rentals unfortunately. Hopefully some changes i'm making to it will make it more inviting for users to post up their listings ( rentals and sales ).

Best places i've found for finding rentals is .... Look up on google.co.cr for "alquiler en {area}"... "alquiler de condominio belen". Also craigslist as suggested is good. So is encuentra24.com as they have a nice volume. The best thing to do though in all honesty is go to where you want to live and walk around the area and ask the guards whats for rent... They usually have a list or can point you in the right direction. Trejos / Rhormoser has some decent deals I would try there if your interested in this side of town.
