I sold a motorcycle to a guy last night who lives in Ottawa Ontario and we negotiated a price and he is having someone drop off a deposit for me on Monday. The balance will be paid next Thursday and then he is having the bike shipped to him. I wanted to get my asking price but I decided to pay half the shipping so I dropped the bike $400. Now another dude tells me he will pay me $500 OVER asking price when I told him I had a sale pending. Being a man of my word I turned down the second offer and will ultimately be losing $900 and I will have the added responsibility of dealing with the dudes freight company and setting up a time to pick up the bike. What would you guys do??? My friend said since no deposit was dropped off yet call and explain you have a higher offer and give him the chance to match it. I say I made a deal in good faith and I would feel like a dick doing that. Sorry I am rambling a bit but I am a little stoned, lol.

A lot of people would renege on the first deal, but I would not. I think a man's word is valuable, and you gave him a verbal commitment that you had a deal.

Now, you could have made the stipulation that the bike was still on the market until you got a deposit in your hands, but it looks like you didn't?

Do whatever you are comfortable with...I would sell it to the higher offer but I might need the money more than you do

It's business. Highest offer wins. How is this guy damaged in any way? Call him back and tell him the updated information.

Since you have no deposit on the bike, I think you should take the 2nd offer. Sure, it's honorable, but what happens if the deposit is NEVER dropped off and he leaves you hanging? How you going to feel about being "honorable" now? And worse yet, the 2nd offer finds another bike and doesn't need yours any longer.

if you buy something at best buy and then find it 100 dollars cheaper at walmart..would you have any problem taking it back?

your word is valuable IF you will ever have more dealings with this guy, otherwise it has no real value

Maybe, because you were willing to pay half the shipping, good Karma brought you a second offer.

This is where you are I differ fundamentally. If you give someone your word, and you are a man of your word, then it shouldn't matter if you ever see
that person again. But, then again I come from the old school, where honesty, integrity and a man's word meant something.

if you are making 900 extra dollars by selling to the second guy , and you feel bad for the first guy , i would call the first guy and explain.

i would say " hey man , its a lot of money and i feel bad. how bout i give you $ 100 for your trouble and so i dont feel so guilty "

i also think you are over estimating the first guys reaction .. if he has any common sense , he'll understand.

I have always lived my life in this manner as well. I guess I handled it wrong right off the bat. First deposit gets the bike.

How would you like to be the guy who thinks he has a deal and quits looking only to find out harrington made $900 extra after both parties have an agreement? A deal's a deal in my book.
