100 losses? Cubs could do it

By Bruce Miles
Crazy. Eights.

The Cubs lost their eighth straight game Tuesday night, 8-2 to the Cincinnati Reds at the Great American Ball Park. It was the second game in two nights in which the Reds won 8-2.

This stuff is really starting to get old.

“It’s a new day, but it seems like everyday is the same because we’re losing,” starting pitcher Doug Davis told reporters after falling to 0-5. “I don’t know how the guys that play everyday handle it. I’ve only been out there for two of the eight. If guys are struggling everyday, that must be tougher. We could score more runs, but if I could keep the leadoff hitter off the bases, it would make it easier. Four of the five innings the leadoff hitter was on. It’s tough pitching out of the stretch so much.”

Here’s what’s not so crazy about these crazy eights if you’re a Cub or a Cubs fan: This team is nearing a pace for 100 losses.

The Cubs have a record of 23-36. At this pace, they would finish 63-99.

The last Cubs team to lose at least 100 games was the 1966 club, which finished 59-103. That was right after then-manager Leo Durocher said the Cubs weren’t an eighth-place team. Durocher was right. The Cubs finished 10th in 1966.

We’re now in the era of “we’re going to get good, and we’re going to stay good,” as declared in 2007 by current general manager Jim Hendry.

The Cubs were good in 2007 and 2008 but they’ve backslid since then and look ready to slide right into the abyss.

But 100 losses? It’s still early, but it’s not out of the question. Let’s look at the upcoming schedule:

Ÿ After the Cubs finish in Cincinnati Wednesday, they head to Philadelphia for four against the powerful Phillies.

Ÿ The Cubs get to come home after that, but awaiting them will be the suddenly surging Milwaukee Brewers followed by the New York Yankees.

Ÿ The road doesn’t get any easier after that with games against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field and at Kansas City before the Cubs close the month with a makeup game against the Rockies and four against the Giants.

The Cubs hung in for a while Tuesday against the Reds, but Davis couldn’t get out of the fifth, when the Reds scored twice to take a 4-1 lead.

It all came crashing down in the seventh, when Miguel Cairo hit a grand slam against Cubs reliever John Grabow.

The Cubs got 3 hits, including 2 doubles and an RBI, from Blake DeWitt, and 3 singles from Darwin Barney.

“Blake and Barney had great nights, but we couldn’t get anybody else to join in the party,’’ manager Mike Quade told reporters. “That’s a lot about what has been going on for a long time. We can’t get any follow through.’’
