Mike Bibby was a freshman starting point guard, and Jason Terry was a sophmore 6th man on this #4 seeded Arizona team with no starting seniors that stormed to the National Title, defeating three #1 seeds on the way.
In 1997, Arizona defeated the University of Kentucky, the defending national champions, 84-79 in OT to win the NCAA National Championship. Prior to winning the championship in 1997, Arizona stormed back from 10-point deficits in the Southeast Regional First Round and Second Round against #13 South Alabama and #12 College of Charleston, respectively winning 65–57 and 73–69. The Southeast Regional Semifinal pitted against overall #1 Kansas (34–1) which had defeated Arizona the year before in the 1996 West Regional Semifinal. However, Arizona came out fast and stunned the Jayhawks 85–82, then prevailed in overtime against Providence 96–92 in the Elite Eight to clinch a berth in the Final Four. Arizona then beat #1 seed North Carolina 66–58 in the Final Four, which turned out to be Dean Smith's last game as a coach. Arizona also accomplished the unprecedented feat of beating three number one seeds in the same tournament. One hell of a surprising ride for an Arizona team that did not win the PAC-10 title that season.

Now, one of these former Arizona teammates in their familiar roles will add an NBA title to their NCAA Championship.

Don't remember. Don't care for Bibby but I do like Terry's style and enthusiam on the court. If Dallas wins, Terry has my vote as series MVP. He's a leader no doubt.

The Wildcats used to be my favorite team until Lute stepped down. I remember guaranteeing they would win the title that year & I got laughed at. I was surprised that Simon never did much in the NBA.

He didn't have a consistent jumper. Was not that strong in the upper body and not a great athlete playing the 2. What made you think he would be good in the NBA. Just because you can score in college doesn't mean you can play in the nBA. 2 completely different games.

No shit they are 2 different games. I have seen much weaker players at least latch on & stay. I am not saying I expected him to be a superstar but to not last as long when you got some career bench guys who were not as talented stay on is surprising.

In the title game win over Kentucky, Miles Simon went for 30 pts on 8-18, and 14-17 FT.
Bibby, 2nd with 19 pts, led AZ with 9 rebounds, and Terry led with 5 assists.
Bibby and Terry combined for 5-8 3ptFG and 6 steals.

One other player from that 1997 championship game is competing in this years NBA Finals, Miami reserve center, Jamal Magloire who played for Kentucky.

I recall that team vividly. I made some decent $$ on betting some long future odds on them. If I remember correctly, Bibby actually played very well throughout also.

Same here EGD. Lute was the epitome of class.

One thing people don't realize is all the NBA announcers that used to play for Lute. Steve Kerr, Sean Elliot, Tom Tolbert to name a few. The reason they are such good announcers is because Lute taught them all aspects of the game.

Bibby, Simon, Dickerson, Terry, Bennet Davidson.

Team just got hot at the right time.

Terry and Dickerson both from Washington State and left for Arizona. Saw Dickerson play in the state playoffs for Federal Way and he was a beast. Believe Terry played for Franklin HS.
