Just for kicks, try to beat this, using players from 1941 till now. My letter is M.

OF: Mays, Mantle, Musial
1st: McCovey
2nd: Morgan
3rd: Mathews
SS: Marion
C: Munson
P: Maddux & Marichal

In fact it would be hard to beat this using 2 letters. I do have one picked doing that also. :toast:

Be very tough to be that Ms

Mathewson and Tug McGraw could be added to the pitching staff

Maris absolutely has to be the rightfielder

Murray or Mize would be better choices at firstbase; Maranville or Eddie Miller at shortstop, but that is a minor quibble

Even have the best DH with Molitor

I'll take B as coming the closest, great lineup, but can't match the pitching (and four of them even have BB initials -- coming up with a team with first and last names of the same letter would be the true test of searching the history books)
C Bench
1B Bagwell
2B Biggio
SS Banks
3B Brett
LF Barry Bonds
CF Brett Butler
RF Bobby Bonds
DH Baylor
Mordeci Brown, Bert Blyleven and Steve Bedrosian

Remember guys players from 41 on. No way Mize @ 1st over McCovey, Murray arguable. Sorry Roger can't replace Musial. PH if I'd named one would have been Molitor (St Paul boy) or Maris. Sorta fun, try it with foots, REALLY tough!!

Id definitely choose Mize over McCovey. Easy choice. 4 best hitters over the late 30's & 40's by far. Ted Williams, Stan Musial, Joe DiMaggio & Big John Mize!

Mauer was coming very close to passing Munson; and add Martinez and Mussina to the rotation and don't think anyone is topping that

Mize had a full nine years where he was one of the two or three best hitters in the league. Plus another three years he was a truly great player, but just happened to be engaging the enemy on the battlefield rather than pitchers on the baseball diamond

Missed the part about post 1941 (how did you come up with that cutoff? Post World War II or post Jackie Robinson would make much more sense). If we discredit the years before that, McCovey would be the better choice, but over their entire careers it is easy to see he falls short of that level

Musial only played about 25% of his career in rightfield, less than either firstbase or leftfield. But if you are going to count him as a rightfielder, that would make Minnie Minoso the leftfielder. And if you are going to count Musial as a rightfielder why not McAuliffe or McDougald at shortstop?

Try another one:
C Ivan Rodriguez
1B Runnels
2B Jackie Robinson
SS Alex Rodriguez
3B Brooks Robinson
LF Ramirez
CF ?????
RF Frank Robinson
Roberts, Ryan and Rivera

but if you pull the Musial-like shenanigans, Rose is at first base and Alex Rodriguez at third, with Ripken at shortstop. But that still leaves a deadspot with Rowand or Rivers in centerfield. Funny that even Ruth might not be as much of an upgrade as, say Reggie Smith or Richie Ashburn

(ends up with one switch hitter and the rest righthanded I think. Perhaps not the greatest balance)

Suzuki would have to be the rightfielder and if you are going to go all-time, Speaker ahead of Snider

There's Bobby Grich and Joe Gordon to choose from. Are Mike Greenwell and Rich Gedman really the best choices for leftfield and catcher from the past 70 years or am I missing someone?

Thanks for the help, I drew a total blank on 2nd. For a Catcher, just heard stories about Josh Gibson that were amazing. Really like Bob Gibson as a SP. I forgot about Mike Greenwell or would have had him as well.

2nd base gehringer to me is a standout for the G's

'How did I come up w/that", because it's my Q, therefore arbitrary. If you want to start one using different criteria be my guest. Your S list falls way short. Sisler, Simmons, Slaughter NO!!! And even if they were, it's ridiculous to rank Enos, & Duke over the Mick & Willie. If you want to make one ALL TIME that's a whole new ballgame. Pun intended.

Also, I didn't break the OF down, L,R or C. Just OF. Nor did I include a RP. A great pitching staff using L & R, would be C, Clemens & Carlton. This started out as FUN guys no need to argue.<><>
