friend of mine sent me this he got a call this morning

coming at 6 in the morning, my first thought was "bad news."

Not so. In fact, some pretty miraculous stuff is taking place.

Clarence is said to be responsive, After taking the initial hit, followed by the 2 brain surgeries, apparently it often takes time to be able to know if there's a thinking, feeling, live human being somewhere deep within the silent, completely still hulk of a man lying flat on his back.

His doctors told his family and the few close friends who were allowed to look into his eyes and speak to him. The response to their voices was tears gathering in his eyes, followed by a gaze that indicated recognition. His doctors said that was a very good sign.

Also quite encouraging for a man who was paralyzed on his left side was that he could squeeze with his left hand - his doctors indicated that that was shockingly positive. And so there is hope where just a day ago, many believed he was lost.

It's still far too early to know anything except from right now until the weekend have been called critical days for Clarence.

Tears in his eyes and a light squeeze from his huge, limp hand may not seem like much - certainly he's a universe away from wailing onstage beside Bruce, but what has happened is that he has moved, albeit only an inch or less in the direction where his recovery waits for him.

That's it - I don't need to be anywhere until ten - back to sleep for me. Thanks for the email and calls - I'll return all of them before the day is done.

One of my favorite things about going to a Bruce concert is that whenever Bruce mention's "the big man", the crowd goes nuts. I wish him the best, and I hope he is able to recover.

He did his last show from a wheelchair.
Love the guy and the band.
He's always been too big.

When the change was made uptown
And the big man joined the band
From the coastline to the city
All the little pretties raise their hands
Im gonna sit back right easy and laugh
When scooter and the big man bust this city in half
With a tenth avenue freeze-out, tenth avenue freeze-out
Tenth avenue freeze-out...

Very sad. This is the second member of the E-Street band to die. Keyboard player Danny Federici died of cancer a couple of years ago. But the band will never be the same after the loss of the Big Man. RIP

Bruce Springsteen has released this statement about Clarence Clemons' death:
Clarence lived a wonderful life. He carried within him a love of people that made them love him. He created a wondrous and extended family. He loved the saxophone, loved our fans and gave everything he had every night he stepped on stage. His loss is immeasurable and we are honored and thankful to have known him and had the oppurtunity to stand beside him for nearly forty years. He was my great friend, my partner and with Clarence at my side, my band and I were able to tell a story far deeper than those simply contained in our music. His life, his memory, and his love will live on in that story and in our band.
