AMERICUS, Ga.

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Leonard Pope saved a six-year-old boy from drowning in his Georgia hometown, the Americus Times-Recorder reported Monday.

Pope, who would typically be off training under the supervision of Chiefs' coaches and staff if not for the NFL lockout, was visiting his hometown of Americus in southern Georgia when he reportedly performed the heroic deed.

The 27-year-old tight end was attending a pool party over the weekend when fellow Americus native Anne Moore said her son Bryson began drowning.

"All of a sudden, I saw Bryson going down in the water and I started screaming," said Moore, who knew Pope long before his playing days. "Leonard was inside, and he came out of nowhere and dove into the water without any hesitation, cell phone in his pocket and all. He saved my son's life, and I am so thankful that he was there for me and my child."

Moore told the Times-Recorder the 6-foot-8, 264-pound tight end was the only guest at the party who knew how to swim.

"The fact that he is normally at camp and could have been in Kansas City just proved to me that he was placed here to save my son from drowning, and I thank God that he was here," Moore said. "He truly lived up to his nickname 'Champ' because he was truly a champion for me and my son this past weekend."

Pope was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals out of the University of Georgia in 2006. He was signed by the Chiefs in 2009. Pope had 10 catches for 76 yards and two touchdowns last season for Kansas City.

this will sound racist, but it must have been almost all black people at the party. I dont see how only 1 person at the party knows how to swim or why the owner of the house would have a pool and not know how to swim. Also who lets kids swim when nobody around is capable of saving them

lots of black people that I know don't know how to swim, i would guess its a shockingly high percentage. I know when a group of like 18 of us went to south padre island for spring break, none of the black guys would go swimming, even though the pool at the house was maybe 8 feet deep at worse and forget going in the ocean

I can relate a couple of similar stories. Last time I went to a public pool in Port Huron, MI the lifeguards had to make 4 saves off the diving board (all black kids). Then I got talking to a black guy in line and he said "Man, I have to do the backflip perfectly to hit the bottom of the pool and push off to the side. I don't know how to swim.":scared:

Its not being racist at all. I used to say its hard to learn how to swim when the only time you went n the water was underneath a fire plug, lol. (as most know in the cities they have a cap to put on the hydrants for the kids to play).

I know the swim issue is still a problem with minorities in our US Special Forces. SF was trying to get their minority numbers up and one of the suggestions was to lower the swimming/drown proofing requirements for them- this proposal was of course rejected, but it is a true fact and it is unfortunate that there are a lot less minorities in SF because they don't know how to swim.
