PITTSBURGH -- A man attacked the wife of Pirates catcher Chris Snyder in a traffic dispute while Snyder sat in the car, unable to get out because he'd had back surgery, police said.
Investigators say Carla Snyder and the scooter-riding man, Subhash Arjanbhi Modhwadia, nearly collided Wednesday. The 44-year-old Modhwadia followed her to a gas station, kicked the vehicle and swung at Carla Snyder. Authorities say he ripped a mirror off the car.
A passer-by and an off-duty police officer subdued him. Police say Modhwadia bit the bystander and threw punches with keys between his fingers. He also took off his shoe and threw it in their direction before being subdued.
Police say the Snyders' two children were in the car.
Modhwadia was charged with aggravated assault, assault, criminal mischief and driving with an invalid license. He is being held on $25,000 bail.
A Pirates spokesman told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the team is thankful people stepped in to keep the family from harm.
"We are grateful for those bystanders who stepped up to assist Chris to ensure no physical harm was done to his wife and children," Brian Warecki told the newspaper.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

I couldn't imagine not being able to do ANYTHING as your wife is being verbally and almost physically assaulted. Glad someone was able to subdue the asshole.

I feel sorry for that family. The crazy dude even threw a shoe at her ... I hope the lunatic spends plenty of time in jail, or better yet, gets deported!

Trial set in road rage targeting Pirates catcher's wife
Thursday, July 14, 2011
By Sadie Gurman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Fearing that a fistfight would aggravate her husband's healing back, the wife of injured Pirates catcher Chris Snyder said she stood between him and a man who had just torn off her driver's side mirror and looked poised to attack them both.

"It looked like they were going to fight, and I didn't want my husband to," Carla Snyder testified Wednesday at a preliminary hearing for the man charged with attacking her at a BP gasoline station in Banksville in what police have described as a case of road rage. "I was more worried about my husband's health than anything. He just had back surgery, and this was his first outing."

Ms. Snyder's cries for help elicited the quick response of passerby Joe Changle, 22, and off-duty city police Officer Arthur Baker, who said he held the struggling man down until other officers arrived.

District Judge Derwin Rushing ordered the man, Subhash Modhwadia, 44, of Scott, to stand trial on charges including aggravated assault, simple assault, criminal mischief and unlicensed driving.

Police said Mr. Modhwadia was riding a motorized scooter that he threw to the ground during the June 15 confrontation. Police said he became enraged after Mrs. Snyder's SUV and the scooter narrowly avoided a collision in the gas station lot, where Mrs. Snyder said she was making a U-turn.

She told the judge that Mr. Modhwadia yelled "You almost hit me!" before he began kicking their black Infiniti, even as Mr. Snyder started to get out of the passenger side.

The couple's children, ages 4 and 6, were also in the vehicle.

"It looked like he was going to punch me," Mrs. Snyder testified. "I considered that he had a weapon," but noticed instead that he had his keys wedged between his fingers.

Mr. Modhwadia remained in the Allegheny County Jail on $50,000 straight bond after the hearing, which was eased by a translator in Montgomery County, who appeared via video screen. Mr. Modhwadia moved from India about three years ago, and speaks a unique regional dialect, which made finding a suitable translator a challenge.

Few other details about Mr. Modhwadia's life emerged on Wednesday. His wife and young son quietly watched the hearing but wouldn't comment to reporters as they left. A man who identified himself only as a member of the community who attended "to make sure justice was served" said he has spoken with Mr. Modhwadia's wife and that she considers the aggressive behavior out of character. The man wondered if Mr. Modhwadia was under some sort of stress in the days before the encounter.

Representing him was Matthew Ness of the public defender's office, who said he did not know what brought Mr. Modhwadia to Pittsburgh and could not comment on the case.

Mr. Snyder came to the Municipal Courts Building, Downtown, with his wife but neither testified nor observed his wife's testimony. He said simply that he was recovering, eager to "get back to the field," and thankful that Mr. Changle and Officer Baker stepped in.

"It takes a special person to do that," he said. "We're very grateful."

when i saw motorized scooter, i initially tried picturing a handicap man swinging a cain or something from his motor powered wheelchair.

girl was 100% at fault in the traffic altercation....does not justify scooter guy to go apeshit
