Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Jordan Zimmermann, Washington Nationals (4-6, 3.10 ERA)

When you play for the Nats, things like Zimmermann’s pitching efforts tend to fly under the radar like a see-thru stealth bomber. The young righty has been exceptional for Washington in recent starts, going 2-0 with a 0.86 ERA in his last three trips to the bump. In fact, Zimmermann has been stellar for a while now, allowing three or fewer runs in eight straight appearances, in which the Nationals are 5-3 in those games. He faced the Orioles back on May 22, allowing only two runs on four hits over 6 1-3 innings of work in a 2-1 loss to Baltimore.

Wandy Rodriguez, Houston Astros (4-3, 3.12 ERA)

Rodriguez picked up where he left off Monday, pitching a six-inning, two-hit shutout in an 8-3 win over the Braves in his first start since coming off the DL with left elbow joint effusion. Before the injury, the Astros ace had allowed only seven total runs in 35 innings, putting up a 2-0 record over five games. He hasn’t tasted defeat since April 24 and has a 1.50 ERA during this undefeated streak. He’s 3-3 with a 2.68 ERA versus the Dodgers for his career.

Slumping

Ricky Nolasco, Florida Marlins (4-2, 423 ERA)

The Fish are quickly going belly-up in the NL East and now take on their state rivals, the Rays, in an interleague showdown. Nolasco’s fortunes haven’t been much different than his team’s. The right hander is 0-2 in his last four starts and is coming off a tough outing against the Diamondbacks, giving up five earned runs on eight hits in just three innings Monday. To make matters worse, Nolasco is 2-2 with a monster 8.38 ERA versus Tampa Bay for his career.

Brandon Morrow, Toronto Blue Jays (2-4, 5.63 ERA)

Morrow was shelled by the Red Sox in his most recent outing, allowing nine runs on 10 hits in just over four innings of so-called work. The righty is winless in his last five starts, despite some solid efforts bookended by terrible performances. Morrow takes on the Reds in interleague play Saturday. He’s only faced Cincy for one scoreless inning during his career.

Hot lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Pirates at Cleveland Indians (-136, 8)

The Cleveland Indians once again are the best bet in baseball, after overtaking Pittsburgh for that title with Friday night’s 5-1 home win over the Pirates.

Today they hand the ball over to surging Carlos Carrasco, who hasn’t allowed a run in his last two starts, including an impressive 1-0 win at Yankee Stadium on Monday. Quietly, Carrasco has been one of June’s best pitchers. He’s won five of his last six starts and has a tidy 2.21 ERA this month.

Pittsburgh counters with hard-luck lefty Paul Maholm, who can’t seem to get a lick of run support ever. Maholm is just 3-7, despite an ERA just over three. He deserves better, but just never seems to get it from the light-hitting Pirates.

Despite their recent struggles, the Indians have a lot of people believing that they’re going to be hanging around throughout the season, mainly because they’re extra tough at home (21-12). We’re getting a reasonable price on Carrasco, who’s got better stuff than the -136 we’re paying. Give us the Indians.

Pick: Cleveland

Houston Astros at Los Angeles Dodgers (-125, 7)

There’s money to be made betting against the lowly Astros throughout the season. But in this spot, we like Houston starter Wandy Rodriguez, who certainly has enough stuff to hamper the Dodgers’ offense. He’s 1-2 with a 2.93 ERA in his last three starts against the Dodgers.

Rookie Rubby De La Rosa, who was battling forearm cramps earlier this week, gets the start for the Dodgers. De La Rosa, a converted reliever, has lasted no more than five innings in either of his career starts.

We’ll wait to see if we can grab a heftier price, figuring that late Dodger money will come for this 10 p.m.ET start. And in the end, we’ll feel pretty comfortable that we’ll at least be in the game late behind Rodriguez and have a chance to cash as mid-sized underdog.

Pick: Astros

Saturday's Fox Tip Sheet

June 18, 2011

It’s safe to say that Fox’s Saturday baseball coverage got the two best matchups of the day this week as the Rangers visit Atlanta and the Yankees play at Wrigley Field. Although the Cubs record may not rate them as high as some other teams, who can not feel a little bit of baseball nostalgia seeing the Yankees play in everyone’s favorite little neighborhood park. We might not get to the level of seeing Babe Ruth calling his shot, as he allegedly did in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series, but the game does take on a whole new era of intrigue that baseball fans everywhere seem to care about. The visual alone makes this Cubs game appealing.
New York Yankees (-135) at Chicago Cubs - 4:10 (EDT)

The Bleacher Bums got a thrill watching the Cubs beat the mighty Yankees yesterday behind the worst starting pitcher in baseball. The Cubs hadn’t won a Doug Davis pitched game during his first six starts, but Davis owned the Yankees Friday allowing one run in just over seven innings of work. The Yankees will try to get back on track Saturday with the most powerful lineup in baseball by taking on the Cubs best pitcher of late.

Ryan Dempster has been very impressive in his last four home starts -- all Cubs wins -- while notching decisions in three of them. In four of his last five starts overall, he hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of the games. His last start - a no-decision -- was probably his best of the season. He pitched seven strong shutout innings against the Brewers with seven K’s.

After watching what Davis did Friday, and seeing what the Yankees have done all season against every pitcher, can we really put too much into who’s pitching against them? We’ve seen Josh Beckett completely dominate them this season, but Beckett still has some of the Yankee anger to get him extra motivated. Detroit’s Max Scherzer was on a roll twice when he beat the Yankees this season, but they Yankees have also handled Felix Hernandez, James Shields and Justin Verlander this season.

It’s not to say that Dempster is in the categories of those pitchers, but he is pitching as well as anyone in the game right now. The best sign that all is good with Dempster is that he has allowed only one walk in each of his last two starts with 15 K’s in 13 combined innings.

On the other side of the mound we have a different story with A.J. Burnett who has lost his last two starts, although his last one was close to a gem in a 1-0 loss to the struggling Indians. On June 1 he got his first road win of the season after the Yankees lost his first four. He’s pitching kind of scared over the last few weeks and is getting too cute around the plate which is putting too many runners on base with walks.

The best thing Burnett may have going for him is that he owns two of the players who are critical to the Cubs success. Carlos Pena and Alfonso Soriano make big hits and the Cubs roll when they do well, but Pena is 5 for 35 with 13 K’s against Burnett while Soriano is 1 for 10.

Last season Burnett was ineffective on the road in interleague road games going 0-2 with a 16.71 ERA. Meanwhile, Dempster hasn’t fared well against the Yankees. Even though he hasn’t faced them since 2001, he’s still 0-2 with a 6.88 ERA in three starts.

While there is no relevance to Dempster’s past record in this matchup, the Yankees mystique looks to be the top reason to make a case for them defeating a pitcher that is on such as roll.

Texas Rangers at Atlanta Braves (-113 & 8) - 4:10 (EDT)

Even though Josh Hamilton and Derek Lowe may face each other only three times in the game, they become the top underlying theme of this game. For Hamilton, he’s got a 24 game hitting streak going in interleague games where he’s hitting .465 over that stretch. The Braves right handed starter hasn’t had the kind of fortune Hamilton has had, in fact, they have been -- in all fairness, awful.

Since 2008, a span of 12 interleague games, Lowe has a 2-8 record with a 5.13 ERA against AL teams. Those numbers may look nice for someone leaning towards the Rangers, but the real number that should be looked at is the Braves wins that have been accumulated since May 1st with Lowe on the mound. Atlanta is 7-2 in his last nine starts. Although Lowe is personally 1-2 in those starts, he has kept the game within reach and been the poster child for quality starts. It’s amazing, because he actually pitched a little better earlier in the year but the team was 2-4 in his first six starts.

Going against Lowe will be Matt Harrison, a pitcher the Braves traded to Texas for Mark Teixeira in 2007. After pitching two straight wins without allowing a run, Harrison has been in a semi-funk his last two starts. One was a four inning stint against the Tigers who hit him often in an 8-1 loss and his last start saw him pitch six strong innings against the Twins, but get the loss. He has been controlling games for the most part over the last four weeks, but hasn’t got the type of support most of us expect from that great Texas lineup.

Harrison has gone UNDER the total in four of his last five starts while Lowe has gone OVER in three of his last five.

Run Line & ML Standings

June 17, 2011

We’ve seen some real movement in the Money Line and Run Line standings since the middle of last week. The surging Red Sox posted an MLB-best +697 “money mark” over the past eight days thru Thursday, while long-dormant Twins have continued their resurrection and posted a +631 from June 8-16.

Meanwhile, the National League had some real losers over the past week, with the Cardinals at a woeful -663, and the Marlins falling from the basement and into a mine shaft at -857, the worst 8-day mark of the season. The NL East-leading Phillies, however, keep bobbing along, posting a superb +659 over the last eight days.

Overall, it’s the surprising Pittsburgh Pirates who are now the most-profitable team this season, standing +1007 vs. the money Line thru June 16.

On the Run Line side, it was again the Twins (+582) and Red Sox (+580) pacing the AL since the middle of last week, while the surprising Mets offered the best NL Run Line value over the past 8 days, posting an eye-opening +586 mark. Since the beginning of the season, the Reds have recording the best MLB Run Line mark, standing at +1266 as of June 16.

Following are the complete MLB Money Line and Run Line standings through games of June 16, with the last eight-day totals (since June 8) also included.

Saturday's betting tips: Rainy day forecast at U.S. Open

Weather to watch

Thunderstorms are forecast throughout tomorrow’s third round of the U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md. The moisture will keep the greens soft, but will also slow the fairways, making the second longest setup in U.S. Open history seem even longer.

Who’s hot

MLB: Red Sox starter Jon Lester has been filthy this month, with batters hitting .192 against him this month.
Lester and the Red Sox opened around -177 home favorites over the Brewers today.

MLB: Twins starter Scott Baker has been a driving force in Minnesota’s resurgence. Baker has struck out 52 in this last 52 1/3 inning pitched. Baker and the Twins host the Padres as -134 favorites.

WNBA: Favorites are off to a hot start this season, covering 61.9 percent of games through the

Who’s not

MLB: Marlins’ starter Ricky Nolasco has a 8.36 ERA against the Rays, who are -122 favorites against visiting Florida.

MLB: Cubs starter Ryan Dempster has never beaten the Yankees (0-3) with a hefty 6.88 ERA against the Pinstripes.

Game of the Day

There's a big fight in Big D, where Alistair Overeem and Josh Barnett are both nearly 4-to-1 favorites over Fabricio Werdum and Brett Rogers, respectively, in the first round of the Strikeforce Grand Prix.

Quote to Note
“It was Tiger Woods of 11 years ago,” Ian Poulter told reporters regarding Rory Mcllroy’s performance in the first two rounds of the U.S. Open. McIlroy sits at 11-under par, six shots in front of Y.E. Yang.

Betting Tips

--Thirteen consecutive 54-hole leaders at major tournaments have failed to break 70 in the final round; only four have gone on to win the tournament.

--The Houston Astros and Cincinnati Reds have been involved in the most games that have eclipsed the total this season. Heading into Friday night’s action, the Astros and Reds have each been involved in forty games that have gone over the total.

Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind......

13) Business tip of the day: if you own a pizza delivery business, hire someone to answer the phones who can actually speak English. This quickens the ordering process and increases customer satisfaction. Having to spell the name of your street seven times (you think I’m kidding, but I’m not) is aggravating and makes ordering pizza less fun.

12) Always wondered where the Nike swoosh came from; turns out a woman named Carolyn Davidson designed it in 1971 and got $35 for the design; years later, Nike also gave her stocks in the company, which are rumored to be worth about a million bucks now.

11) Michigan State-North Carolina are playing a basketball game in San Diego November 11 (Veteran’s Day) on the battleship USS Carl Vinson, the same ship that buried Osama bin Laden at sea earlier this year.

10) This is an actual NCAA rule, just so you know how goofy their rules can be: “It would be legal for a kid to eat an entire pizza at a coach’s house on an official visit, but he couldn’t eat just one piece and take a second piece home with him.” How stupid is that?

9) 2011-12 bowl schedule is out; first bowl is December 17 at 2pm in Albuquerque, the New Mexico Bowl, pitting a mediocre MWC team against a lousy Pac-12 team. Good tickets are still available.

8) Watching the NBA Combine on ESPNU Thursday night, Danny Ainge was saying how the player interview and the physical were more important than the station drills they do. Interesting stuff, but can only watch guys do vertical jump for so long before you reach for the remote.

7) Now that the Minnesota Timberwolves have Ricky Rubio signed, they have to hope that he’s good. Have been conflicting reports from Europe on just how good the young guard has been playing.

6) Is it possible the Cincinnati Bengals are really worth $900M? I read that figure earlier today and it stopped me in my tracks. What would they be worth once Mike Brown is out of the picture, or if they had an indoor practice facility?

5) Wade Phillips will help the Houston Texans’ defense, but he’s been an interim coach so many times, I’d be a little worried if I was Gary Kubiak and ol’ Wade came walking through the door. Kubiak is definitely a goner if the Texans don’t make the playoffs this season.

4) Red Sox moved their Saturday game from 1:00 to 7:00 to accommodate the Bruins’ parade late Saturday morning. Would expect the Stanley Cup to make an appearance at Fenway before Saturday’s game.

3) It took them four days, but MLB changed a double given to Pirates' Andrew McCutchen and changed it to an error on Mets’ 3B David Murphy. This doesn’t happen much, far as I know, but a committee looked at the play and were unanimous that the scoring needed to be changed, which I think saves RA Dickey two earned runs, but costs McCutchen two RBI.

2) Florida Marlins are 8-21 since star pitcher Josh Johnson got hurt, which is very bad news, since Johnson just got transferred to the 60-day DL, meaning he won’t be back before the All-Star break.

1) Washington Nationals batted their pitcher 8th in the batting order in their series against St Louis this week, the way Tony Larussa used to do it; was this a tribute to Larussa by Jim Riggelman? Never understood the advantage of batting the pitcher 8th, but Larussa did do it off and on for a few years. Nationals did it again Friday against Baltimore, as they won their 7th game in row, scoring 33 runs last four games, with P batting #8.
