Actor Peter Falk, who was best known for his role in the TV series "Columbo," has died, according to a statement released by his family. He was 83.

The statement said that Falk "died peacefully at his Beverly Hills home in the evening of June 23, 2011." He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Shera, and two daughters from a previous marriage.

A cause of death was not released.

The actor suffered from Alzheimer's disease and advanced dementia that intensified after a series of dental operations in 2007. In 2009, his wife, Shera, and daughter, Catherine, engaged in a legal tug-of-war over who should be in charge of his personal affairs; a judge ruled that Shera would retain control.

Falk was best known for his role as iconic cop Lieutenant Columbo in the long-running TV series. He won four Emmy awards for his work on the show.

Falk also found success on the big screen. He was nominated for Oscars for his roles in "Murder, Inc."(1960) and "Pocketful of Miracles" (1961).

He began his career in theater and returned to the stage late in his career. In 1972, Falk won a Tony for Neil Simon's "The Prisoner of Second Avenue."

"Serpentine" is always the word I think of if I'm ever caught trying to run away from something or someone

Fun Fact - Here in Florida that's honestly useful info because a mature alligator can "outrun" most humans if going in an extended straight line. Thus, "serpentine" is the best way to escape

I too enjoyed those older TV shows. I was still a teenager in those years when we lived with my grandparents. I once put a 1000 piece collage jigsaw puzzle together with televison as the theme. As you might image, Kojak and Columbo were incleed included in the puzzle. My grandmother would always say Columbo was a scruffy little man who smoked too much. Bear in mind her generation were some of the first to be exposed to professional wrestling and believe its authenticity without question so to her and others Columbo was an actual guy who wore a trench coat, solved murders and smoked too much. Columbo and Mr. Falk did indeed entertain us and make us smile as the genre of those TV Police Shows flourished in those years.

Wife and I spent the day in Indy today and I picked up the 2nd season of Columbo while doing some shopping. I have a few of the other seasons also as Columbo was one of my favorite shows of all time. Just weird that after buying that today, I get home and hear this news. One of the great TV characters of all time. May he rest in peace...

I'm the biggest Vincent D'Onofrio fan in the world.
There is a lot of Peter Falk in his Detective Goren character, you just know D'Onofrio studied Falk.
