Man, I remember when EVERYone was on MYSPACE.
It is amazing how fast one company can fall off the face of the Earth.
Less then 3 years ago MYSPACE was happening, and Facebook was almost an afterthought.

This change happened almost overnight.

Most of the time when companies fall apart it happens slowly. Almost so slow that you dont even notice.

But not Myspace. It was like overnight almost.

I went to my old Myspace page the other day it its a complete ghost town.

I guess this is a great lesson for the .com's.

You can be king today and out of business tomorrow.

Are you listening FACEBOOK and Google?

Some people here think Facebook will be around forever but I don't see it. Every company, especially on the internet where it's about being the next big thing, ends up falling.

Before Myspace it was all about AOL and their chat rooms and all that. Nothing lasts folks. Especially things that are about trend.

I know it. The chat rooms used to be so fun but the spammers are not moderated. And dating sites used to be free.

If there is one thing to learn from facebook, it's that a highly successful interpersonal internet business model can be free of charge.

True most things end but Facebook keeps evolving. Facebook destroyed Myspace. Also-2 to 10 years ago everyone from middle school to college used AIM to chat online and now its almost exclusively facebook. As long as they dont remain stagnant they will be good to go. Also-myspace let themselves go by allowing so much spam and so much music and crap all over the pages.

I can't tell you how many times I was chatting with girls that were probably men. It's amazing. I don't think there was a single woman on AOL. Remember when AOL would kick you off for a few hours and then they would humiliate you and you had to call their number and apologize to them? Dear god was that bad. Thank god they are gone now. They were never able to adapt to the changes.

Myspace knows what it feels like now when they were so dominant other sites like Friendster couldn't get off the ground.

Now they are the ones being run into the ground.

I don't know ANYONE that uses Myspace anymore.

Maybe very young kids who haven't caught on to Facebook yet...

I think Facebook will be around a long time. I compare it to Google in that they've become integrated to the net. Everywhere you go in these search engines, it takes you to their page. That's huge. But I won't say they'll never fail because GM thought they were too big to fail. But as long as Facebook's owners keep a serious business sense about them and don't take too many gambles, they should be around a long time. I know people out there who live for Facebook like other people do to texting. So it's still going strong.

myspace gave people too much control - music and animation and other bs on their pages... fb was really smart to control the content, as it allowed them to branch out more - creating relationships with other entities and such. i think fb will be around for awhile.

Myspace still has a purpose as it is better tailored towards musicians which Facebook will never be consider its setup & model. However the changes they made to the music side of things were a mistake in my opinion.

Well the purpose of its music side were tailored towards indie artists. My issue is with the sudden change in layout of how to find artists & such. They have gone the Facebook route in the sense of the profiles not being able to be customized as much as they once were. However it feels forced & handcuffed with too much change within a smaller space. It is a problem when the site feels cramped & I am on a 27 inch computer monitor.

Dead on. MySpace's single biggest mistake was allowing customization of pages. The day slow-loading glittery graphics and annoying animations started showing up was the day people older than 14 started leaving. The takeover by teeny-boppers and thugs killed that site.

Sigh. You think a $50 Billion company is going to disappear? Facebook has a market cap twice as high as dell. As long as it keeps evolving and
adapting, it's going to be around for a hell of a long time.

Facebook’s recent investment from Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) gives it a valuation of $50 billion. Not only does that make it one of the largest private Internet companies ever (if not the largest), but it’s also bigger than many household-name public companies.
The New York Times (NYSE:NYT) pointed out yesterday that Facebook is now considered to be worth more than eBay (NASDAQ:eBay), Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO), and Time Warner (NYSE:TWX).
But those are just the beginning…

Facebook is worth more than United, American (NYSE:AMR), Delta (NYSE:DAL), JetBlue (NASDAQ:JBLU), and Southwest Airlines (NYSE:LUV) combined (About $32 billion combined market cap)

Most of what you are saying is meaningless to the longterm of facebook.

They are far from bullet proof.

Marketcap is almost a meaningless measure in determining a company.

Netscape had almost as big a MC in 2000. How did that turn out?
AOL had an even bigger marketcap. How did that turn out?

Both above companies are practically out of business now.

To say facebook will be around for years and years just because they have a big market cap means nothing.

Convenient that you failed to mention two of my key points. I said their huge market cap, plus if they keep evolving and adapting to customer needs will keep them around for a long time.

Lets be honest. If a genie came out of a bottle and offered you 100% ownership of Dell or Facebook which one would you choose.

Netscape lost out because they arrived early in the computer age and bigger and better browsers came along. Who is going to come along that is going to be bigger than Facebook? If Facebook goes bottom up it's going to be from within, and making bad business decisions. Not it's competetion, which basically now doesn't exist.
