I bought a house in April of 2010...the house was built in the late 70's. Previous owner replaced the whole a/c and heating system in 2007 with an amana.

I went out of town over the weekend for 3 days, set the a/c on 78 while i was gone. i get back today around 3 oclock and crank the ac down to 75, it finally gets down to 75 and shuts off and around 9 oclock tonight, i noticed it was getting hot inside again, so i look at the thermostat and it says its 78 (thermostat was set at 74). there is air blowing through the vents, but its hot air. i go look at the outside unit and its humming but the fan is not spinning. anybody know what might be wrong?

also, when i bought the house the previous owner left the warranty paperwork on the a/c systtem. will amana cover anything replacement parts or anything? i never registered my name with them or anything, but i have paper work that says it has a 1 yr labor, 10 yr parts and 10 yr compressor

ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED, ITS 100 PLUS IN TEXAS

Cut if off now. The fan motor is probably out. It is trying to run and will just burn itself up unless you go turn it off. Call the HVAC man tomorrow.

yea, i did cut it off as soon as i noticed it getting hot inside and the fan not blowing outside.....what kind of damage, moneywise, are we talking about if warranty is useless? couple hundred bucks or big money?

I had the same thing about a month ago and it was a blown fuse. Very cheap repair , although they'll probably want to service the unit also.

Also check the filters , they may need to be cleaned or replaced.

Don't think it's a big deal.

Compressor could be frozen
Fuse might be tripped

Go to the fuse box and start tripping switches. You may also have a main breaker box on the outside of you house. Your AC generally has an entire breaker to itself...my trip that as well.

BUILT in IOWA, near Iowa City in the AMANA COLONIES.

AMANA is a shadow of its former self...............avoid.

The only decent thing they still make is microwave ovens.

Here in Texas in June when it is a 100 plus out you will be lucky to get an AC guy to answer a phone call for under $200.

quit fucking with it....you cant fix a bad motor throwing breakers. you'll be lucky if the compressor is still good as it is. use the amana dealer, dont let him sell you no bullshit service plan just get it fixed and pay the man. retail on a motor and capacitor could be $200 bucks.

Never said I was Fucking with it. Parts are covered under warranty, I only have to pay for the labor. They say they will be at my house in the morning, we will see

I am sure I am of no help here, but I did have a problem with my unit (not sure of brand) in Florida that would blow warm air out and then was told about a little red button on the outise unit that I would have to press about 3x a summer and it would fix the problem.

Only thing I tried to do was flip the breaker on the unit. Got home today and it was 91 degrees inside my house, I'm currently calling Best Western my home for the night. I have a toddler or I'd rough it at the house. So far I've spent $75 on two big fans from Wal-Mart for last night (which I plan on taking back and getting my money back for after my AC is fixed in the morning), $80 on hotel for tonight, and we will see how much they charge me for labor tomorrow.....if I can get through this mess for less than $250 or so, ill be happy.

Thanks for the help though

I am no expert!!!
But had a similar problem. Turn everything off and get a long screw driver.
A piece of re-bar will work also. Stick the screwdriver between the little bars on top of the unit and move the fan so it spins. If its stuck and you are able to make it spin
or un freeze it you should be good to go.If that doesn't work let the experts fix it.

Yea, I just saw somewhere on the internet where somebody had said they did that and it fixed it. I will go to my house first thing in the morning and try it, if it works could save me the service call and labor.....thanks for the info

even if it works it'll quit in a couple hours when it gets hot....you'll be in the same boat only you'll have overheated the compressor AGAIN!! If your determined to buy a new unit for about $5000 keep trying to rig it....

Finally......AC is working. It was a bad compacitor (spellcheck).....service call $95, and labor $29, total of $124 and best money i ever spent.

After I take my fans back to wal-mart, its total of about $200 or so for the repair and hotel last night....not too bad considering they had me by the balls with it being 100 plus outside in texas

also, for what its worth, greenhead was right. i could have kick started the fan, the repair guy said if i did that, when the ac kicked off when temp got to the temp i wanted, i'd have to kickstart it again when it was time for it to come back on. so it would have been a temporary fix, but would have worked for the night had i tried it yesterday
