Ok so I have a peculiar predicament that I would like some intellectual conversation about....

I started betting baseball with a bookie that was recommended to me by another bookie a few months ago. I have been on a really good run as of late and am up rather large on him (well into the 5 figures, between 10,000 and 90,000 for those that must know).

The bookie and I are not geographically close so we have always settled through checks via mail. During the first few weeks of betting, the bookie sent me a few checks and he stalled me a few days but finally told me to cash them, and I did with no problems. I have no problem waiting a few days to cash a check, in my younger days of betting I asked of others to do the same...although it was odd to me someone of this "magnitude" was short over a check for just a few thousand...

After that, the bookie has sent me multiple checks and has continued to stall me with various excuses and scenarios of why he doesn't have the money but is getting it soon. I have the checks on me and I go to the banks regularly to see if the money is in the account to cash, but the banks continuously tell me there is insufficient funds in the account. I am almost positive he is keeping amounts in the account low enough where he knows the checks will bounce or will not be available to be cashed.

I am growing very impatient with this predicament and getting very tired of hearing, "any day now" when I talk to him about the availability of the money from him.

To his credit, he does exchange texts and calls from me daily and although I don't particularly believe him, acts genuinely like he is going to pay me as soon as he can.

What would be some of your methods of getting the money from him? Being that I have checks "worth" thousands of dollars from him, I feel like I have some leverage...

That sucks. I wouldn't be making anymore big bets with him till you can cash what you've already won. I'd stay friendly with him through txt and phone. I'd definately be betting really small bets though, cause I doubt he would be taking your bets if you mailed him a check and told him not to cash it for a week or two. Sounds like he's hoping you lose what you won before he pays you

Actually he has told me to stop betting with him, he didn't want to run the "tab" up any higher, I could start back betting once he paid me off...which I thought was a good thing.

there is no way you can get it from him.

what are you going to do, go across the country and fight him?

just hope he pays you.

I've not been in this situation before, but, maybe settle for less, and call it a day? Again - i've never not been paid, so this may very well be a dumb suggestion. Also, if we're talking this kind of money, is a not-so-veiled threat out of the question, be it legal or otherwise?

I thought that since I had checks from him...particularly bad ones, that maybe there was someway I could force the issue...

I had used the dude before and we have exchanged quite a bit of money between us...obviously now I know better. I can't take back what is done, but I can change my actions in the future, particularly pertaining to this one...

My opinion is that as long as he's not ignoring you and he's responding to all your calls and texts in a timely manner that he is not a stiff and he will pay you. Keep in mind that this is a very tough time of year for most agents...

dont see how you could force it, unless you threaten to go to the cops if he doesnt pay since he gave you bad checks.

Yea hoping this is the case...but I have had situations before where dudes have went from excuse to excuse just to push back the inevitable...they weren't going to pay!

You went on a hot run, which means he went on a cold run. Chances are he has very little baseball action from his players which means he has few chances to make some $ to use to pay you back.

I wouldn't piss the guy off. Wait it out. He will start having some cash flow once NCAA football kicks into gear. Your checks will clear then.

2 cents.......

When you go to cash a check they can tell you if there is enough funds in the account to cash...

I'm not going to waste my time validating my story, either add to the discussion or fuck off!

Claims to have 100 or so baseball players that all bet a dime or more...FYI

Sounds to me like this bookie is honest but just a little over his head.
You won beyond his limits.
The fact that he is keeping close contact with you makes me believe that he intends to pay.

This is what I would do if I were you.

I would tell your bookie that you will void all the big checks he just sent you.

Then tell the bookie to send amounts on a weekly or monthly basis that he can afford to send in an aggressive manner.

If he owes you 20K, tell him to send you 1K or 2K a week till it gets payed off.
If he is honest he will jump all over this offer.

It may take you 20 weeks to get your 20K but you will at least get you money.

Once everything is paid off, thank him for being honest and then find another bookie, or at the very least dont ever let your tab get to the point that it got to without asking for a payout.

I understand that your upset. I think the best advice is to play it cool, understand he might be in a bad spot and when he's back up he'll rember you as a cool guy and make sure he squares you away. Good Luck

if you have a 2 party check a bank is able to tell you if it will clear. They also don't want to deal with bounced checks.

damn, that is a HUGE book of business. Freaking huge. For what it's worth, I heard the last 10 days have been hard on the books in regards to baseball, with the players winning.
