While being considered as a potential starter for the NL in next week’s All-Star Game, Atlanta Braves starter Jair Jurrjens made a strong case with a one-hit gem last night. Jurrjens took a no-hit bid into the seventh until Adam Jones bounced a single up the middle with one out.
After several successful streaks and a run at NL Rookie Pitcher of the Year the first half of his inaugural season, it’s hard to believe the 4-0 win goes into the books as Jurrjens’ first career shutout.
The win improved Jurrjens’ record to 11-3 and placed him in the NL lead in the win column while dropping his NL-best ERA to 1.89. It was the second complete game for J.J. this season, a game he showed great control finishing with eight strikeouts while walking just one.
After the game, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez campaigned for his starter to make the All-Star roster.
“Outstanding. It was one of his best performances of the season so far. He’s been the most consistent pitcher we’ve had…maybe will get some people’s attention. “
That person he’s referring to would be San Francisco Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy who will be choosing the pitching staff for the National League team.
The win was the Braves ninth of the past 11 and keeps them near the top of the NL East just four games behind Philly. Not a bad position for a team to be in after losing several players to injuries including their entire outfield for much of the season.
