Yankees, Mets Complete Subway Series At Citi Field

The 2011 Subway Series comes to an end Sunday and features a pair of right-handed starters with the first pitch scheduled for 10:10 a.m. (PT) on TBS.

The New York Yankees assured themselves of at least a tie in the season series versus the Mets in capturing a 5-1 victory Friday night at Citi Field. The Bronx Bombers have also won a season-high six consecutive games heading into Saturday.

Daytime baseball has been a profitable situation for the club over the course of the year, registering a Major League-best 23-4 mark under the sun. The pitching staff has been a main proponent of that success by owning an American League-low 2.79 daytime ERA.

The Bronx Bombers have also enjoyed their time away from Yankee Stadium, moving their record to 21-13 after capturing the series opener. During interleague action, the team is 11-4 in its last 15 interleague road games versus right-handed starters.

Veteran starter Freddy Garcia (7-6, 3.28 ERA) is set to make his 16th appearance (15th start) for the Yankees and comes in on a two-game winning streak. New York’s offense has provided 16 runs of support in those outings, as he has surrendered four runs (two earned) and 11 hits over 13 innings.

Garcia has compiled an even 2-2 mark and 2.83 ERA in six road outings (five starts), surrendering just two home runs in 35 frames.

He has also been a major proponent in helping the squad’s daytime dominance, entering with a 4-1 record and 1.62 ERA in six daytime starts. Opposing hitters are hitting just .199 against him in those contests compared to .306 at night.

The New York Mets still possess a 126-119 all-time mark against American League opponents despite dropping their first game of an abbreviated three-game homestand. Since 2004, the Mets are 2-1-4 in the season series versus the Yankees.

After starting the year 1-8 at home, the club has gone 17-13 in its last 30 games at Citi Field. The catalyst for that revival has been expected All-Star Jose Reyes, who collected two hits Friday.

Reyes leads the major leagues with a .352 batting average heading into the holiday weekend, while also pacing the Senior Circuit with 65 runs scored.

Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (4-7, 3.77 ERA) hopes to continue his strong pitching of last month and tally a second straight victory. The former first-round selection proved victorious in a 14-3 road win over the Tigers last time out, allowing three runs and 10 hits over seven innings.

Dickey finished June with a 2-1 mark and 2.57 ERA in five starts, but his career numbers during this calendar month suggest a major drop off in performance today. He has tallied a lackluster 3-9 record and 4.16 ERA in 30 lifetime appearances (16 starts) in July.

Yankees slugging third baseman Alex Rodriguez is a key player in this matchup, going 6-for-11 with an RBI against him.

Home plate umpire Bob Davidson will likely serve as a handicapping edge for the Mets, as hosting teams have garnered a 15-6 record in his last 21 Sunday games behind the dish.

Weather forecasts suggest game-time temperatures in the mid-80s and a 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms. The wind is expected to be 5-10 mph out of the southwest.

Dodgers, Angels Finish Freeway Series At Angel Stadium

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Angels finish their latest installment of the Freeway Series Sunday night on national television.

ESPN will broadcast from Angel Stadium of Anaheim at 5 p.m. (PT). The pitching matchup is Chad Billingsley (7-6, 4.22 ERA) against Ervin Santana (3-8, 4.08 ERA).

This is the second series between the teams this year. The Angels took two of three on the road last weekend, with the Dodgers scoring seven total runs.

The Dodgers did much better in the Friday opener with a 5-0 shutout behind Hiroki Kuroda. The Saturday night result is still pending with a great pitching duel between Clayton Kershaw and Jered Weaver. The Angels were 130 favorites.

The Dodgers are still 3-7 in the last 10 meetings between these teams.

The Dodgers (37-46) are in an embarrassing last place in the NL West, tied with San Diego. This is amid news that they’ve bounced checks to team employees and owner Frank McCourt has filed bankruptcy as he tries to ward off a league seizure of the club.

Billingsley has been a bright spot the last two starts, getting interleague wins over Detroit and Minnesota while allowing just one earned run over 11 1/3 innings. His six innings pitched at Minnesota last Monday was his longest stint in June.

The 26-year-old right-hander badly needed a good road start. His away ERA is just 5.69 and he didn’t have a quality start in his prior three road outings (8.05 combined ERA). L.A. was still able to win two of those games with good offense.

The ‘over’ is 4-0 in Billingsley’s last four road starts.

Billingsley didn’t see time in the first Angels series and is 1-3 with a 4.28 ERA in seven lifetime appearances against them (five starts). He last started in this park in 2009, allowing three earned runs over six innings in a 5-4 loss.

The Angels (42-41) made a strong move to end June with an 11-4 record in their final 15 games. They’re just two games behind Texas in the AL West.

Santana is one of MLB’s most hard-luck pitchers. His ERA is just slightly higher than last year (3.92) when he went 17-10. His OPS allowed is also just slightly higher (.750 versus .744) and his strikeout rate is much better (7.51 vs. 6.83).

The Angels won his last start versus Washington (4-3), allowing two earned runs over eight innings, but he didn’t get the win after a blown save by closer Jordan Walden. Santana lost his prior four starts (3.86 combined ERA) with the team scoring seven total runs.

The ‘under’ is 4-0-1 in Santana’s last five starts overall.

Santana last faced the Dodgers last year, surrendering three earned runs over seven innings in a 6-3 home win. He’s 3-3 with a 3.93 ERA lifetime against them.

The ‘under’ is 22-11-6 in the Angels’ home games this year, while the ‘over’ is 24-14-2 in the Dodgers away games.

The Angels are just 18-21 overall at home this year and one of the most unprofitable home teams. However, they did sweep Washington at home before this series.

Umpire Dan Iassogna will call balls and strikes. The home team is 5-0 in his last five games behind the mask. The Angels are 5-1 in his last six home plate assignments.

Los Angeles weather should be beautiful and in the 70s – what else would you expect? Both teams start home series on Monday, the Dodgers versus the Mets and the Angels against the Tigers.

Sunday's Tip Sheet

July 3, 2011

Just like any Sunday in the NFL, Sunday's pro baseball card has a few tiers of start times that can keep you betting with chances of either winning more than you already have for the day or giving one last shot at getting back to even. That drama is enhanced even more than usual today as we have two late games to close out the day and 2011’s interleague schedule.
Dodgers at Angels (-135 & 7) - 8:05 pm (EDT)

If the Dodgers can’t get pumped up for this game, then they should just fold the season like Frank McCourt. They will not win the "Freeway Series" for the fifth straight year. It may not seem like that big of a deal, but it is to both sets of fans and players. Should the Angels win, they will take the series for the eighth time to the Dodgers three during interleague play. If the Dodgers win, they’ll salvage a split for the third time in four seasons.

Chad Billingsley (7-6) will take the mound with hopes of winning his third straight game, something the Dodgers have done twice this season with him. He looked very sharp in his last two outings combining to allow only one run in interleague games against the Tigers and Twins. He should be strong and ready to give his best because he hasn’t pitched past the sixth inning in any of his June starts.

Ervin Santana (3-8) has been the tough one to figure out all season. In his last start against the then streaking Nationals, he went eight innings allowing only two runs, a game the Angels eventually won 4-3 in 10 innings. But prior to that good outing, Santana took the loss in four straight starts. He even lost to the Marlins who didn’t beat many in June.

However, Santana went deep into all those losses pitching well and the Angels combined to give him only seven runs in those four games. Santana’s record has been more of a product of the Angels just not hitting which is why he still maintains a high rating in each of his starts and is favored considerably over Billingsley who has a better a record.

When the two teams met last Sunday at Dodger stadium, the Dodgers avoided their second straight sweep at home from the Halos with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to win. In that game, their Dodger blue pride could be felt with each final at-bat during the rally. Because of the rivalry, and them being much more hungry in salvage mode, we may see a similar circumstance as they play for a season draw.

Marlins at Rangers (-200 & 9.5) - 8:05 pm (EDT)

C.J. Wilson (8-3) is a massive favorite today over Javier Vazquez (4-8) which has many bettors going through a dilemma on what side to take. “Should I talk myself into betting against the large favorite? Should I continue to bet against the Marlins and take the Rangers on the run-line, or should I just play the Rangers to win, despite being uncomfortable about laying $2.00 or more?”

This is what many will have to ask themselves before they bet the get-back game tonight. Most people have a low opinion of the Marlins after their June, and rightly so. But to be fair to Florida, they did win the last two games of June against the A’s and have held their own at Texas splitting the first two games as they enter Sunday’s rubber match.

Although the last start Javier Vazquez (4-8) made was at Oakland, a very pitcher friendly park, Vazquez has been affective in his last three starts. He went seven strong innings against the A’s without allowing a run. Before that, he went 5.1 innings without allowing a run to the Angels, one of the Marlins few wins of June. At Philadelphia he pitched well allowing only two runs but the Marlins lost 3-0.

It’s not hard to make a case for Vazquez with the exception of the Marlins being 6-10 in his starts and having the tendency to implode at least once a month, but it sure does make it easier to believe in his chances when getting $1.80 for every dollar wagered on him. And then you’ve got the veteran aspect of it and actually seeing him dominate at times in his career where three games stretches like he’s currently on weren‘t out of the ordinary like it is this year.

As for Texas, after starting June off with five straight wins, they muddled around the rest of the month never winning more than two games in a row and have continued that trend into July. Wilson was the lone outstanding pitcher for Texas during June having gone 3-0 with a 2.72 ERA while the Rangers went 4-1 in his five starts. In all three of his decision for June, the Rangers won on the run-line.

This really is a tough game to chose from just because of the price, but because it’s one of the last of two night games, it will see plenty of action, largely with the public on the Rangers. The one telling stat about the Marlins is their play on Sunday’s where they have lost their last six games. In four of those instances they were flying out of town after the game just like they will tonight which is a sign they just want to get out of town and quit somewhat during the game.

Sunday’s streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STREAKING

Cliff Lee (9-5, 2.66 ERA), Philadelphia Phillies

This lefty just finished off a one of the most memorable months for a pitcher in baseball history. Cliff Lee went 5-0 with three complete game shutouts and a 0.21 ERA in June. That ERA is the sixth-lowest in the National League for a pitcher in a month since the statistic began being tabulated in 1912, according to ESPN.com’s Stats & Info.

Yeah, so dude’s been okay, I guess.

"It's been a good run, no doubt about it," Lee told the Associated Press after tossing a complete game two-hitter at Fenway Park against arguably the best batting order in baseball. "I've had a few in my career, but I don't look back and compare them. I want to throw a shutout every time out there. I never want to give up a run."

SLUMPING

Rick Porcello (6-6, 5.06 ERA), Detroit Tigers

Manager Jim Leyland desperately needs someone besides Justin Verlander to produce from his starting rotation. Porcello, along with a few others, isn’t delivering.

He’s been shelled for 28 hits and 18 runs over his last 11 and 1/3 innings of work (that’s a 14.30 ERA and a 1.85 WHIP for those of you scoring at home).

"He threw some bad pitches that they hit, and he threw some good pitches that they hit," Detroit manager Jim Leyland told reporters after the Mets tagged Porcello for seven runs in his last outing. "They were aggressive and they beat us up pretty well."

The big righty just isn’t fooling any hitters these days. He’s struck out just two batters over his last three starts and he’s still throwing his fastball over 70 percent of the time, according to ESPN’s Insider Edge.

At least over bettors can take solace knowing this guy knows how to put up crooked numbers on the scoreboard. The over is 4-0 in his last four appearances.

Zack Greinke (7-3, 5.63 ERA), Milwaukee Brewers

Greinke’s numbers are more difficult to figure out than a rubick’s cube wrapped in an enigma. The former Cy Young winner has close to an 8-1 strikeout to walk ratio and the Brew Crew are 8-3 in all games he’s started this season.

But what about that ugly ERA and the fact that the over is 8-1-2 in his starts with Milwaukee? You kind of get the sense that he’s been more lucky than good so far.

"It was just a real bad game," Greinke said after surrendering seven runs in just two innings of work against the Yankees. "I wasn't executing anything, and when I did just a couple of times, they took some good pitches, and I wasn't able to make another good pitch after that. I couldn't pitch any worse than I did."

Hot lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at New York Mets (+105, 8.5)

Alex Rodriguez doesn’t know how to open his mouth without saying something stupid. Even compliments seem awkward when uttered off his lips. A-Rod recently told the New York press members that Mets shortstop Jose Reyes is baseball's best player.

Now there’s nothing wrong with respecting an opposing player, but if you’re going to shower a guy with the “best player in the world” tag, shouldn’t you be doing that with someone on your team – especially when you play for the Yankees and you play alongside like nine or 10 All-Stars every day?

Despite a week filled with A-Rod making bad headlines (Rodriguez was named in an illegal, high-stakes, celebrity, poker game), the Yankees keep marching on. Entering Saturday’s games, the Bronx Bombers have won six straight and covered the runline in each of those contests too.

The Mets are sending out R.A. Dickey to the mound, but it doesn’t seem like even a knuckleballer can slow down the Yanks’ offensive attack.

Pick: Yankees

Baltimore Orioles at Atlanta Braves (-170, 7.5)

The Braves are playing some of their best baseball this season and there are reasons to think things will only get better for Tomahawk choppers. Jason Heyward, the club’s most talented player, hit a home run on Friday and snapped a 33-game homer-less drought.

Heyward has been back since the middle of June but has been moved around in the lineup because of his inability to knock in runs. The outfielder finished Friday’s contest with two RBIs, pushing his total up to six since returning to the lineup.

"I know I can't get it all back in one game or one series," Heyward told the Associated Press after the win against Baltimore. "I've been swinging the bat pretty well and feeling pretty comfortable."

That’s bad news for the Braves’ opponents.

Pick: Atlanta
