Motorcyclist crashes in helmet law protest, dies

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A bare-headed motorcyclist riding in protest of New York state's helmet law crashed, struck his head on the roadway and died from his injuries, state police said on Sunday.

Philip Contos, 55, was riding among a large group of motorcyclists staging an organized protest ride in western New York near Syracuse against the state law requiring all motorcyclists to wear helmets.

The Parish, New York, resident crashed on Saturday on Route 11 in Onondaga, New York, and was pronounced dead later at a local hospital, state Trooper Robert Jureller said.

"The doctor felt that the death could have been prevented if he simply had been wearing a helmet," Jureller said. "He hit the brakes, lost control, was ejected and struck his head on the road. He suffered a skull fracture."

I'm still getting my license this month! Been practicing with an instructor who I know and almost ready to take the safety course which gives you your license.

Doubt I'll ever ride without a helmet though.

It's ridiculous that practically every state has a seatbelt law, yet many of them do not have helmet laws.

Having spent 15 years as a paramedic on a big city fire department, I've seen many idiots take the whip because they didn't have a helmet on....

I used to think those laws were the dumbest thing ever, and a big infringement on our individual liberties and rights. Getting a little older and thinking about it now, its probably done to protect kids or teenagers underage or whatever that could be passengers..or might learn those bad habits when they are old enough...so kinda makes sense in that light.
