Cliff Lee, Phillies Host Charging Atlanta Braves
The Atlanta Braves are making a hard charge at the Philadelphia Phillies as the teams meet in Saturday’s Game 2, their final series before the All-Star break.
The afternoon affair from Citizens Bank Park will begin at 1:10 p.m. (PT). Cliff Lee will oppose the visiting Tommy Hanson.
Atlanta (53-36) trailed Philadelphia by six games in the NL East standings on June 19, but is 14-3 since and has cut the lead to 2.5.The Phillies are actually a solid 10-6 in that span, winning their last five series.
Friday night’s opener is still pending with Philadelphia a hefty 170 favorite behind Roy Halladay.
Hanson (10-4, 2.52 ERA) is officially an All-Star snub at fourth in the NL in ERA and among the leaders in wins. He’s been even better the last five starts, going 5-0 with a 1.97 ERA. Pitching in the shadow of teammate Jair Jurrjens (12-3, 1.87 ERA) hasn’t helped.
The 24-year-old right-hander does have a higher ERA away (2.81) than at home (2.23). However, the team is 6-0 in his last six road starts with just a 2.08 ERA.
Hanson has somehow avoided the Phillies in the three series this year. His final two starts against them last year were 11 shutout innings, although Atlanta lost both. He has six career starts against them (1-2, 2.45 ERA), going 0-1 with a 1.13 ERA in the two at Citizens Bank Park.
The ‘under’ is 5-1 in Hanson’s starts against Philadelphia.
Philadelphia (55-33) hit well in its recent six-game road trip (6.17 runs per game). The ‘over’ went 5-1.
The Phillies surprisingly struggled hitting in both May and June (3.73 runs per game combined). Fortunately, the pitching staff has come through all year (3.05 ERA). Atlanta leads the NL with a 3.02 ERA.
Lee (9-6, 2.92 ERA) was selected to pitch in his third All-Star game in addition to teammates Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels. That’s what Phillies brass was expecting when it signed Lee this offseason to form a dream rotation including Roy Oswalt.
Lee struggled with a 3.94 ERA through May with Philadelphia going 6-6. He was tremendous in five June starts (5-0, .21 ERA), before getting roughed up at Toronto (six earned runs over 7 1/3 innings) last Sunday in a 7-4 loss.
The 32-year-old is 0-2 with a 7.84 ERA in two starts against Atlanta this year. The one in Philly was decent on May 6, three earned runs over seven innings in a 5-0 loss.
The crafty lefty will be pitching on an extra day’s rest. He has an incredible 0.57 ERA in his last six starts in that situation, with the ‘under’ going 6-0.
There rivals have already played nine times this season with the Braves winning five. They took two of three at the Phillies in May, holding them to five total runs and the ‘under’ going 2-0-1. The ‘under’ is 12-3-2 in the last 17 meetings overall in Philadelphia.
Philly has baseball’s second-best home record at 32-14, (+10.9 units). The ‘under’ is 6-0-1 in its last seven home games.
Atlanta is a very respectable 25-18 on the road (+6.3 units) after going 10-3 in its last 13. However, none of the last four road series came against winning teams.
A thumb injury landed Philly outfielder Shane Victorino on the disabled list Friday while Placido Polanco (back) was questionable. Atlanta still has outfielder Martin Prado (calf) on the DL.
Weather will be clear and warm in the 80s. Sunday’s afternoon finale will be another good pitching matchup of Cole Hamels against Derek Lowe.

Padres At Dodgers MLB Betting Preview
The San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers are keeping each other company at the bottom of the National League West standings heading into the final weekend of Major League Baseball action before the All-Star break. Saturday’s game will be televised on FOX and the first pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m (PT).
San Diego dropped two of three games against San Francisco earlier in the week and entered this series with an even 13-13 record versus divisional opponents. All three of the contests were decided by two runs or less, which is nothing new for a club that has seen 54 of its first 89 games decided within that margin.
The Padres rely heavily on a bullpen that ranks second in the majors with a 2.83 ERA, directly leading the squad to a perfect 33-0 mark when leading after eight innings during the 2011 campaign. All-Star closer Heath Bell has been nailing things down in the ninth since future Hall-of-Fame thrower Trevor Hoffman left Southern California, converting 60 of 61 save opportunities, including 26 of 27 this season.
Right-hander Aaron Harang (7-2, 3.71 ERA) is expected to return to the starting rotation after spending time on the 15-day disabled list with a fracture in his right foot. The right-hander tossed 70 pitches in a minor league outing Monday.
Harang was brilliant in his second start of the season versus the Dodgers at home, posting a 7-2 victory, allowing just two runs (one earned) and three hits over six frames. The former San Diego State hurler will need to do his best in keeping shortstop Rafael Furcal off the base paths, who comes in 10 for 18 with five RBIs against him.
Los Angeles has been walking a slippery slope in dropping five of its last six games and will get a chance to save the season by playing 21 of 24 upcoming games versus divisional opponents. The Dodgers held a players-only meeting before Thursday’s 6-0 shutout victory over the New York Mets, which may signal the club’s intention to finish the weekend in strong fashion.
Rookie Rubby De La Rosa (3-4, 4.31 ERA) stays in the rotation due to a season-ending injury to Jon Garland. The right-hander has dropped four consecutive decisions, as the team has been outscored 21-5 in those outings.
De La Rosa hasn’t fared well in front of the home faithful, posting a 1-3 record and 5.82 ERA in five games (three starts) at Dodger Stadium. Bettors will not expect things to change for this particular contest, as the Blue Crew is 2-10 in its last 12 Saturday contests.
Runs have also been hard to come by in this particular matchup, as the ‘under’ is 21-6 in the last 27 meetings.
Weather forecasts suggest sunny skies and game-time temperatures in the mid-70s in the Los Angeles area. Winds are expected to be out of the southwest at 5-10 mph (out to center). Under those wind conditions, games at Dodger Stadium have averaged 7.04 runs a contest.

SEC Aims For Sixth-Straight National Title

The SEC looks to continue its unprecedented college football dominance with the conference’s sixth-straight national title.
There are plenty of options to choose from with six teams ranked in the top-25 of one preseason college magazine. Defending champion Auburn isn’t even one of them after major defections on both sides of the ball, with Alabama looking poised to take its place.
The Crimson Tide are solid 3/2 favorites to win the SEC and 9/2 co-favorites with Oklahoma to win the whole thing. Coach Nick Saban is looking for his second national championship with Alabama after going 14-0 two years ago. He also guided LSU to a share of the national title with USC in 2003.
Alabama (10-3) lost three games last year to South Carolina, LSU and Auburn, but ended things right with a 49-7 win over Michigan State in the Capital One Bowl. Quarterback Greg McElroy is gone and his leadership with be sorely missed, with a battle brewing to replace him between sophomore AJ McCarron and freshman Phillip Sims.
Star running back Mark Ingram and receiver Julio Jones are also gone. Trent Richardson (700 rushing yards last year) is ready for more carries and Marquis Maze and Darius Hanks are two solid receivers. The offensive line looks very strong as so does the back-seven on defense. There are d-line questions with Marcell Dareus and others departing.
The schedule looks very favorable with no South Carolina or Georgia and top SEC West foes (LSU and Arkansas) both at home. There is an early game at Penn State on Sept. 10, which will be the first major test for the new quarterback.
Here’s a look at the other SEC contenders with conference odds in parentheses.
LSU (+400) relied on its defense and rushing game to amass an 11-2 record last year, including a 41-24 win over Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl. However, coach Les Miles engineered several fortunate wins mid-season and that can’t be counted on again.
Defense and the running game should both be strong despite losing cornerback Patrick Peterson and running back Stevan Ridley. Senior quarterback Jordan Jefferson completed just 56.5 percent of his passes last year for the nation’s 107th ranked attack (155.6 YPG). He needs to be much better for these conference odds to have value.
Georgia (+450) appears to be in a three-way SEC East battle with South Carolina and Florida. The Bulldogs finished 6-7 straight-up and 5-8 against the spread, although they did play better once receiver A.J. Green came back from his suspension. He has since left for the NFL.
Quarterback Aaron Murray played very well as a freshman last year and he’ll get help from incoming running back Isaiah Crowell and returnee Caleb King. The defense should improve in the second year of the 3-4 alignment and the schedule looks good without Alabama or LSU.
South Carolina (+450) is still looking for its first SEC title. The team did make the conference title game last year, a 56-17 whooping by Auburn. Coach Steve Spurrier has seven starters back on both sides of the ball, but quarterback Stephen Garcia has to stay out of trouble and beat out Connor Shaw. The running game looks strong with Marcus Lattimore as does the defense.
Florida (+600) has a new energetic coach in Will Muschamp, but the same quarterback in senior John Brantley. Brantley struggled (116.4 QB rating) trying to replace Tim Tebow last year and had more interceptions (10) than touchdowns (nine). Defense is Muschamp’s specialty, but only a few starters return. The good news is that young talent is always waiting to emerge in Gainesville.
Arkansas (+800) loses big-arm quarterback Ryan Mallett, but Tyler Wilson threw for 332 yards and four touchdowns in relief at Auburn last year. The Razorbacks also return their top four wide-outs and top back (Knile Davis, 1,322 yards). The defense returns seven starters from an underrated group that was 36th in the nation in total yards (347.9 YPG). Its biggest problem is playing in the stronger SEC West.
The rest of the teams in order of conference odds are Tennessee (+2000), Mississippi State (+3000), Auburn (+5000), Kentucky (+7500), Mississippi (+10000) and Vanderbilt (+10000).

Troy, FIU Lead Sun Belt Conference Odds

With all of the shifting around of colleges across the country, the Sun Belt has remained firm. This season, there should be a ton of ups and downs for the programs across this conference as the nine teams vie for two bowl tie-ins.
The favorites in the Sun Belt this year are clearly the Troy Trojans and Florida International Golden Panthers, both of which are +240 favorites to win the conference crown. Last season, these were the two Sun Belt teams to go bowling. Troy knocked off the Ohio Bobcats 48-21 in the R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, while FIU took won the Little Caesars Bowl over the Toledo Rockets 34-32.
Both teams return their starting quarterbacks, and it is clear that NCAA football betting fans are going to love watching both Troy's Corey Robinson and FIU's Wesley Carroll this year. Robinson threw for 3,726 yards and 28 TDs as a freshman last season. Carroll, the transfer from Mississippi State, threw for 2,623 yards and 16 scores.
The Trojans have a lot of replacements to find offensively. The biggest loss is the versatile Jerrel Jernigan who did just about everything last season, throwing for 41 yards, rushing for 309 yards, receiving 822 yards worth of passes and accounting for 936 return yards. Robinson still has a plethora of receivers to throw the pigskin to, and he should have a fantastic sophomore year leading an offense that averaged 456.5 YPG last season.
These two teams meet in a nationally televised game on Tuesday, October 18 at FIU Stadium, and the winner is likely to be the frontrunner for the 2011 Sun Belt title. Last season, the Golden Panthers took away a 52-35 win at Troy, which is why they won their first conference crown.
If you're looking for a team that could come from off of the pace to win this conference, take a look at the Arkansas State Red Wolves, who are +600 to win the conference on the NCAA football betting lines. The Red Wolves nearly made it to their first bowl game in team history last year, but they lost their last three games, including an inexplicable defeat to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers as 13-point favorites.
ASU has a great returning signal caller in Ryan Aplin, who threw for 2,934 yards and ran for 477 yards a season ago. He accounted for 32 TDs between rushing and passing. The problem is going to be improving a defense which allowed 440.5 YPG and ranked No. 113 against the rush at 210.3 YPG.
The team to watch on the rise in the Sun Belt is Western Kentucky, which is still trying to get used to its new spot in FBS football. The Hilltoppers went 5-3 ATS in conference play last season, though they are still searching for their first conference victory at home since being promoted to the FBS.
Still, there is a bonanza of returning talent on this team that is ready to take the next level up to respectability in this conference. Bobby Rainey accounted for a whopping 1,649 yards on the ground last season, while Kawaun Jakes is hoping for better under center after throwing for 1,680 yards and 10 TDs against six picks last season.
WKU is still the second longest shot on the board to win the Sun Belt at +1250.

Fresno State Bulldogs Favored To Win WAC
Boise State may have left the conference but they could still have an impact during the 2011 WAC season.
Two of the schools expected to be on top, Nevada and Fresno State, are the opponents of BSU two weeks in a row. The title for the WAC was a three-way tie between Nevada, BSU and Hawaii when all was said and done a year ago. This year, there appears to be a split right down the middle of the 8-team conference.
Currently on the Don Best odds screen, the team to beat is not Nevada, but rather Fresno State. The Bulldogs are the +195 favorite to come out on top of the WAC.
Fresno State is coming off of back-to-back 8-5 seasons and the best news for the Bulldogs, and every WAC team, is they do not have to compete with Boise State on their conference schedule anymore. In their matchups over the last three years the Bulldogs gave up point totals of 51, 51, and 61.
The Broncos will be their non-conference opponents at home on October 7.
The key for this team to go far will be protection from an offensive line that lost four starters. The new O-line will be protecting quarterback Derek Carr (brother of former Fresno State QB David). On defense, they lose their leading pass rusher Chris Carter (11 sacks in 2010) but retain Logan Harrell (10.5 sacks in 2010).
Nevada is +250 and the biggest challenge will be replacing QB Colin Kaepernick who was taken early in the second round of the NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Tyler Lantrip will be his probable replacement.
Besides losing their QB, runningback Vai Taua and tight end Virgil Green, there was much more serious news that surfaced. Wide receiver Brandon Wimberly was shot in the abdomen last month and may not be able to play football ever again.
The Wolf Pack will also have a killer schedule to start the season with four games in a row on the road including Oregon (their opener), Texas Tech, and Boise State.
Hawaii is also +250 and revolves around their QB Bryant Moniz who threw for over 5,000 yards in 2010 and added 39 TD throws. The Warriors lose safety Mana Silva, who had eight interceptions a year ago, as well as four of their starters on the offensive line.
The good news is that they have a manageable schedule, even if it includes four consecutive road games, and do not face Boise State.
Louisiana Tech is +500 and is the last of the expected top-4 teams in the WAC. The “other” Bulldogs have nowhere to go but up with a defense that ranked 116th a year ago. Offense should be the key for them as they look to improve upon their 5-7 record in 2010.
Utah State is +1000 and loses quarterback Diondre Borel but get RB Robert Turbin back. San Jose State is +1000 as well and has plenty of experience but they failed to get a single conference win last year. Four of the Spartans' last five games were lost by one score or less, though.
Idaho is +2500 and QB Brian Reader will be hoping for better protection from the Vandals in 2011. Last season they gave up the 3rd most sacks in the nation.
New Mexico State is +3300 and to have any chance the Aggies will have to control their turnovers.

Saturday, July 9

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Tommy Hanson, Atlanta Braves (10-4, 2.52 ERA)

The Braves budding ace has won five straight starts heading into the weekend, boasting an ERA under 2.00 in that span. Hanson’s most recent gem was a one-run, seven-inning effort in which the young righty struck out six and walked only one batter.

Chris Carpenter, St. Louis Cardinals (4-7, 3.74 ERA)

The Cardinals ace started slow but is finding his Cy Young form in recent starts. Carpenter has won three outings in a row after starting the year 1-7, posting a trim 0.75 ERA over his last 60 2-3 innings of work. He’s coming off eight shutout innings versus the Reds, giving up six hits and striking out three batters.

Slumping

Rubby De La Rosa, Los Angeles Dodgers (3-4, 4.31 ERA)

The Dodgers’ struggles are in part to poor pitching from the backend of their rotation, but also a lack of run support. De La Rosa has taken four straight losses but didn’t pitch poorly in his past two trips to the bump. He has give up only four runs in 14 innings but received only two runs of support in that span.

John Lackey, Boston Red Sox (5-8, 7.47 ERA)

It’s been a rough summer for Lackey, on and off the field. The veteran right hander is dealing with his wife’s battle with breast cancer while struggling on the hill. He has dropped three straight outings, lugging a chunky 9.45 ERA in that span. Lackey, who has taken a few shots from the Boston media for his closed-off demeanor, is coming off a brief appearance, giving up seven runs on nine hits in just 2 1-3 innings before getting the hook in a 9-7 loss to Toronto Monday.

Hot lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies (-155, 6.5)

It’s easy to get caught up in the Braves’ recent run. They had won 9 of 10 heading into Friday’s series opener in Philadelphia. But that streak was filled with series against the Padres, Orioles and Rockies, not the three most intimidating teams in the majors. None of those teams have anything close to the pitching staff of the Phillies, so the Braves will have their hands full this weekend in Philadelphia, especially today.

Cliff Lee goes for the Phillies against the Braves’ Tommy Hanson. We all know how good Lee was in June, and he got touched up a little bit in his last start, but has always been a bounce-back pitcher.

Hanson has been great of late, and we feel that he’ll be popular with the public. So we’ll wait a little bit to see if we can get Lee at a much more attractive price. Is -145 too much to hope for?

Pick: Phillies

New York Mets at San Francisco Giants (-166. 6.5)

Tim Lincecum takes the bump for the Giants against the Mets’ Chris Capuano.

With an 11 mph wind forecast to blowing straight out to center at AT&T Park, we’re going to go over 6.5 runs in this spot.

Lincecum hasn’t been himself as of late. In fact, the Giants have lost four of his last five starts.

Plus, the Giants absolutely rake off of Capuano. Current Giant players are hitting .414 off him.

The 6.5 total seems like a little bit of an overreaction to Mets shortstop Jose Reyes being out.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see this number go up to 7 or, at a minimum, we’ll see extra juice on the over. So we recommend grabbing it early, because 6.5 is just too low with the weather conditions and Lincecum’s recent trends.

Pick: Over
