Mariners at Angels (-125 & 6) - 3:35 pm (ET)
Sunday’s game of the day features a critical American League West matchup with two of the best pitchers in baseball this afternoon from Anaheim. The Angels’ Dan Haren (9-5, 2.65 ERA) is coming off his second shutout of the season and looks to be the same pitcher we saw dominate in April. Meanwhile, Seattle’s Felix Hernandez (8-7, 3.22 ERA) is coming off a no-decision where he went eight innings allowing only one run with strikeouts.
While Haren was figuring things out in May and June with sub-par performances compared to the standards most of us expect from him, Hernandez has been very consistent, sarcastically, in a sense that he rarely puts his team on his back for two straight games. The Mariners longest win streak with Hernandez starting has been three games. Seattle is currently on a rotating “Win one Lose one” routine with him for seven straight appearances.
For all of Hernandez’s press clippings and baseball people applauding his skills as a pitcher, his team is still only 11-8 this year when he takes the mound and yet he‘s a huge price in almost every one of his starts. He was a little sharper last season, but it was still hard to understand how a pitcher who goes 13-12 on a season can win the Cy Young award. Former Philadelphia Phillies standout Steve Carlton won 27 games with a team that lost 97 games. Now that’s a Cy Young award winner -- winning despite your team.
The trend that Hernandez has set says that it’s Seattle turn to lose and it‘s not hard to believe if we look at 2010. He faced the Angels five times last season going 0-3 with the M’s splitting the other two games where he didn’t get the decision.
Haren has pitched at Seattle twice already this season getting a no-decision in a 2-1 loss and winning 6-3 on June 13. But the best thing Haren has going for him right now is momentum of not allowing a run in his last two starts, each of which were 1-0 wins.
Haren is also on a run of three straight UNDER’s at home while Hernandez has kept the game UNDER in his last two road starts.
You won’t get many chances to bet Hernandez as an underdog this season despite his inconsistent nature just because his numbers keep his individual ratings high, which tells you how good Haren has been of late to be the favorite.
Padres at Dodgers (-113 & 6.5) - 4:10 (ET)
It’s hard for me to understand how some of the writers who vote for awards and other things that matter in baseball devalue wins as a measure of a pitchers success while praising how tough they are to score on, yet a pitcher like the Padres Tim Stauffer (5-5, 2.97 ERA) doesn’t get any love.
Maybe it’s because he plays for the Padres, who nobody watches or concerns themselves with, or just maybe nobody has started a campaign on his behalf. So let it start now and let me be the one to sing his credentials.
It may not get him the Cy Young like the sabermetric geniuses did for Felix Hernandez and Tim Lincecum and it certainly won’t get him into the All-Star game because Bruce Bochy has all the pitcher spots reserved for his guys, but at least the one Padres fan out there that googles his team can find some positive spin on how great Stauffer has been this season.
In the midst of Stauffer’s personal streak of three straight wins, we can pat him on the back even more by saying he might be one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball since June 7. He’s had six starts with the Padres going 4-2 over that span. The two games San Diego lost was a 1-0 defeat at Minnesota and a 2-0 setback to the Nationals. In those losses, Stauffer only gave up one run in 14 innings of work.
In Stauffer’s last 42 innings of work he’s only allowed six earned runs. All he has needed this season was just a little run support and that is what he’s been given lately by the Padres. It may not be a lot of runs, but he doesn’t need it. Give him two runs and there is a better than average chance he is going to win the game.
The way the Dodgers and Padres have played the last two days, one run may win it. The Dodgers have taken the last two games by an identical score of 1-0, giving the Dodgers shutouts in three straight games.
After taking two of four from the first-place Giants -- with three of the games going OVER the total -- the Padres bats have laid down flat again.
But there’s something about the ace of a staff going where everyone focused a little bit more. The Padres won’t have a lot of great memories on the season, but it’s obvious that their play is a bit more inspired when Stauffer's on the mound. They have momentum with Stauffer and when a team is grasping for anything they can to get them fired up, their ace pitching well can be that spark every fifth day.
Taking the mound for the Dodgers as they try for four straight shutouts is Ted Lilly (5-9, 4.94 ERA) who has lost four straight and he’s been the primary reason. In three of the losses, Lilly gave up six runs in each.
The Dodgers are 2-0 with Lilly on the mound against the Padres while the Padres are 3-0 against the Dodgers in Stauffer’s last three starts dating back to last season.
Because of the last two games these teams have played, betting the OVER may sound like a stretch, but Lilly has generated quite a few runs in his last six starts with five of them soaring OVER the number. Stauffer has seen two of his last three starts go OVER just because the Padres bats came alive with him on the mound
Mets at Giants (-155 & 7) - 8:05 pm (ET)
An odd happening took place the last time Matt Cain (7-5, 3.22 ERA) took the mound, as the Giants lost at home with as the starter. It had happened only one other time this season in his seven starts, but the Padres knocked him around for five runs in a 5-3 loss. If we add his last two road starts into the mix, were looking at three Giants losses in his last four starts.
Those figures should be encouraging if looking to go against the weak hitting San Francisco bats and take a shot with the Mets, but then all of a sudden you realize that it’s Michael Pelfrey (5-7, 4.64 ERA) that has to be the pitcher to get you to the promised land. Based on Pelfrey’s (2-7) road record this year, getting only +145 may not sound like enough.
But we can look at the positive side of things and note that Pelfrey did win his last start on the road at Dodger stadium, a 6-0 win where he went six strong innings.
The current body of work each team as a group have put in over their last 10 games would indicate that the Mets are more together -- especially offensively -- as we head into Sunday night’s game. With incentive because of Cain’s recent struggles and Pelfrey breaking a five game road losing streak his last time out, +145 doesn’t sound too bad after all.
Another bonus in looking to take a shot with the Mets is that All-Star closer Brian Wilson (25 saves) has blown two saves and lost another game in his last five appearances. But these are the world champs and they relish in the opportunities to play in close games. Nobody does it better and Wilson is a big reason why.
Although Wilson gives the appearance that he’s a freak and nothing bothers him, blowing games does mess with his confidence. It also doesn't help that his manager iced him on the bench in a save situation last night, allowing Sergio Romo to seal the deal.
One bet that is highly advised against on the night is taking the Giants on the run-line who lead the league with a 25-12 record in one-run games.

Mets, Giants Play Final Game Before All-Star Break
The New York Mets and San Francisco Giants have the dubious honor of playing the final scheduled game before the All-Star break. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. (PT) Sunday in front of a nationally televised audience on ESPN.
New York rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning to take the series opener, 5-2, winning its 11th game in 16 tries. The Mets entered the three-game set with a 26-21 road record and are 5-0-1 in their last six series away from Citi Field.
All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes will not be able to make a contribution versus last year’s World Series champion, landing on the disabled list Thursday with a Grade 1 strain of his left hamstring. He was leading the National League with a .354 average and 124 hits.
Offensively, the club has scored 21 runs over its last six games, coming away with five wins in that span. The ‘under’ is still 7-2 in New York’s last nine contests overall.
Right-hander Mike Pelfrey (5-7, 4.64 ERA) will be looking to capture back-to-back wins for just the second time this season, tossing six shutout frames in a 6-0 road victory over the Dodgers last time out.
Despite his recent effort, Pelfrey is historically one of the worst road pitchers in the Major Leagues, coming in with a 2-7 mark and 6.05 ERA in 11 starts away from Citi Field. He has made 61 career appearances (60 starts) on the road, posting a dismal 19-27 record and a 5.44 ERA.
The former first-round-selection out of Wichita State has made seven lifetime starts versus the Giants, tallying a 2-1 record and a 2.04 ERA, holding them to a .198 batting average. He has limited San Francisco infielder Pablo Sandoval to just two hits in 10 at-bats.
San Francisco has seen 74 of its 90 games decided by three runs or less this season and relies heavily on a bullpen that ranks third in the National League with a 3.17 ERA.
The Giants’ offense has been dormant for most of the 2011 campaign despite sitting atop the National League West standings, hitting just 19 home runs at AT&T Park, the fewest by any MLB team at its home ballpark.
Total players have taken notice of the squad’s lack of hitting and great pitching, as the ‘under’ is 25-15 on the shores of McCovey Cove.
Matt Cain (7-5, 3.22 ERA) has been one of the starting rotation’s most consistent options, providing seven innings of work in four consecutive starts. The right-hander has also received just seven runs of support from the offense over that span.
Cain has recorded a solid 4-2 record and a 2.81 ERA in eight home starts, as opponents are hitting just .204 against him, while surrendering just three home runs in 57 2/3 frames.
He will not miss facing Reyes tonight, who has collected eight hits in 14 career plate appearances against him, including a home run and five RBIs.
The ‘over’ is 9-4 in Cain’s last 13 starts versus NL East opponents.
Weather forecasts suggest sunny skies with game-time highs in the upper-50s and a westerly wind of 10-15 mph (out to center). The ‘under’ is 13-4 this season at AT&T Park under those wind conditions.

Sunday's betting tips: Halos' Haren looks unstoppable

Weather to watch

New York Mets at San Francisco Giants – A 13 mile-per-hour wind is forecast to be blowing out to straightaway center at AT&T Park. Skies will be sunny, with temperatures in the high 50s.

Who’s hot

MLB: The Under is 12-2-2 in Angels pitcher Dan Haren’s last 16 home starts.

MLB: The Under is 8-1-1 in Pittsburgh pitcher Paul Maholm’s last 10 home starts.

WNBA: The New York Liberty are 5-0-1 ATS in its last six games.

Who’s not

MLB: The Over is 3-11 in umpire Gary Darling’s last 14 games calling balls and strikes. He’ll call Cincinnati-Milwaukee on Sunday.

MLB: The Marlins are 2-6 in Chris Volstad’s last eight home starts.

WNBA: The Tulsa Shock are 4-10 ATS in its last 14 games against winning teams.

Injury not to be overlooked

Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez (.295, 13 HR, 52 RBIs) did not play Saturday against the Rays due to a slight meniscus tear in his right knee. Manager Joe Girardi said A-Rod could miss a month if he decides to have surgery. That decision could come Sunday. “It’s a big part of your lineup,” Girardi said. “It’s a productive piece, it’s a guy that’s hit .300 that has home run capabilities, but if he decides to have surgery then we have to get through it, that’s all.”

Key stat

46 – That’s how many RBIs third baseman Chipper Jones has delivered for the Braves, second-most behind catcher Brian McCann. Jones underwent surgery Saturday to fix a medial meniscus tear in his right knee. The 39-year-old will be out two to three weeks.

Game of the day

Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies (-173, 7)

It’s Cole Hamels vs. Derek Lowe in the series finale matching NL East leaders.

Notable quotable

"We're very similar. They're younger than us, but as far as big potential, they have some young hitters that have a chance to be very good. They've got depth in their bullpen. They can come at you.” – Phillies manager Charlie Manuel on the second-place Braves.

Tips and notes

The U.S. women play Brazil in Sunday’s World Cup quarterfinals in Germany, with the Brazilians favored to advance. BetOnline.com pegs the Brazilians at -145 to advance, with the U.S. set at +115. That includes extra time and penalty shots. The total for regulation goals is set at 2.5, with the Under at -125 and the Over at +105.

Umpire Phil Cuzzi will be behind the plate when Detroit visits Kansas City on Sunday. The Under is 20-8-6 in Cuzzi’s last 34 games calling balls and strikes, and the home team is 21-8 in Cuzzi’s last 29 behind the plate.

The Dodgers had lost 1501 units for their backers heading into Saturday’s game, the fifth-worst performance in MLB. And the circus surrounding the team continues. The Dodgers fired legend Steve Garvey from their marketing and community-relations departments, perhaps in response to his comment stating he’d like to be part of a group to buy the club if owner Frank McCourt is forced to sell. McCourt has steered the club into bankruptcy but is trying to retain control of the franchise. Speculation abounds that MLB soon will try to take over the team and sell it.

Sunday's six-pack

-- You're going to hear more about players skipping out on the All-Star Game; a guy goes 5-for-5 on Saturday, how does he justify skipping out on a supposedly meaningful game so he can get three days off?

-- Houston Astros are on pace to lose 109 games this season.

-- Brian McCann leads the big leagues this season with three home runs in extra innings; pretty damn good for a catcher.

-- Tampa Bay Rays turned down a day/night doubleheader Saturday in the Bronx; Friday's rainout will be made up on September 22 instead.

-- Dodgers and Padres combined for three hits Saturday. Like it or not, it was a lot more fun to watch baseball in the steroids era.

-- There are 68 NBA players scheduled to make $8M+ this season, all of whom will get bupkus if the lockout isn't settled. You really think the Players Association is going to have solidarity? Ha!!!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

C.C. Sabathia, New York Yankees (12-4, 2.90 ERA)

How a talent like Sabathia was snubbed by the AL All-Star squad is beyond us – and most level-headed baseball bettors. For those handicappers who love them some extra motivation, Sabathia can prove he belongs in Arizona with another stellar outing Sunday. He’s won five straight starts and has only one loss in his last 10 trips to the bump. He’s been especially sharp in his last three outings, boasting a 0.40 ERA over 22 2-3 innings of work. The hefty lefty is 8-3 with a career 3.24 ERA versus the Rays.

Dan Haren, Los Angeles Angels (9-5, 2.65 ERA)

The Halos push in the AL West has a lot to do with Haren’s current form. He’s 4-1 in his last five starts, winning three straight heading into the weekend. Over that three-game span, the right-hander has posted a 1.21 ERA, 18 strikeouts and just two walks. His most recent performance was a complete-game shutout against the Tigers in which he allowed two hits and fanned nine batters.

Slumping

Jeff Francis, Kansas City Royals (3-9, 4.69 ERA)

Francis isn’t adjusting well to life in the American League. The former Rockies starter is winless in his last four games, going 0-3 with a no-decision in his most recent start. Francis hasn’t been terrible, allowing just eight total runs in the past three games, but he’s received little run support or backup from the bullpen.

Ted Lilly, Los Angeles Dodgers (5-9, 4.94 ERA)

The Dodgers left-hander is 0-4 in his last four outings and has pitched into the sixth inning in only one of those starts. Lilly’s last start, which lasted six innings, came on extended rest due to elbow soreness. He’s been especially crappy at home, with a 3-6 mark and an ERA north of 5.00. He is, however, 7-3 with a 3.00 ERA versus the Padres over his career.

Sunday Night Baseball: Mets at Giants
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Mets at San Francisco Giants (-160, 7)

Sunday’s primetime matchup features the National League West-leading San Francisco Giants and the NL Wildcard-chasing New York Mets in a showdown of two postseason-capable squads.

JOSE CAN’T YOU SEE

While ESPN has to be pleased about the matchup of two elite teams, it would probably be more excited if Mets shortstop Jose Reyes was on the diamond. Reyes, arguably the first-half National League MVP, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a hamstring strain on July 3.

If the Mets are missing his league-leading numbers, like a .354 batting average or a ridiculous 13 triples and 30 stolen bases, they aren’t showing it. New York is 5-1 with Reyes out of the lineup, including a 5-2 win at San Francisco in the opener of this three-game series. The Mets tagged All-Star closer Brian Wilson for a pair of runs in the decisive ninth inning.

METLIFE INSURANCE

The Reyes injury is not the only one the Mets have been dealing with. Two of their starting corner infielders, third baseman David Wright and first baseman Ike Davis, have been out since mid May. Wright is one of the cornerstones of the franchise and Davis is a great role player, but New York has hardly skipped a bit without the pair. The Mets are 27-22 with Wright out of the lineup and 30-23 with Davis out.

CAIN IS ABLE

San Francisco’s starter Sunday night is Matt Cain, who was tagged for five earned runs in an uncharacteristic outing against San Diego last time out. It was the fourth consecutive outing Cain lasted exactly seven innings.

He allowed seven hits and one walk in a 5-3 loss at home. The good news for the Giants is that Cain has been superb in bouncing back from rough outings. On May 29, after allowing five earned runs in a loss, Cain rebounded with back-to-back wins, allowing a combined two earned runs in 16 innings.

After allowing five earned runs on June 14, Cain went on a tear, allowing only one run in 21 innings of work. Then came his struggles against San Diego. Look for another bounce-back performance from Cain (7-5, 3.22 ERA) Sunday.

OFFENSE IS OFFENSIVE

The fact that the Giants remain atop their division is a testament to their excellent pitching and defense. When it comes to offense, though, the Giants are downright offensive.

They rank in the bottom third in all meaningful batting statistics, including runs per game (3.61, 27th in the league) and team batting average (.242, 25th in the league). You know your team has issues when Aubrey Huff and Pablo Sandoval are leading it in home runs with eight.

Amazingly, Miguel Tejada and his .240 BA leads the team among hitters with a minimum 279 plate appearances.

SO WE MET AGAIN

This is the second series between the two teams. In early May, the Giants took two of three from the Mets. The lone Mets win came in the series finale - a 5-2 decision with Michael Pelfrey on the bump. Pelfrey gets the nod Sunday night. In the meeting in May, Pelfrey went 7 2-3 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits and two walks.

NOTEWORTHY NUMBERS

As far as styles, the Mets and Giants couldn’t contrast more. Heading into Saturday, the Mets averaged 4.45 runs a game and allowed 4.28 runs a game. Compare that to the Giants, 3.61 runs for and 3.54 runs against. Put the Mets on the road and keep the Giants at home and the difference grows. On the road, the Mets score 4.75 runs a game and allow 4.37, while the Giants can only muster 2.86 runs a game at home while allowing 3.21 runs.

It’s no surprise that the over is 48-37-4 in Mets games and 35-49-6 in Giants games.

The Mets are 6-1 in the last seven games against the NL West and Pelfrey is 4-1 in his last five starts against the Giants, but has lost 10 of his last 11 road starts versus a team with a winning record.

The Giants are 8-3 in their last 11 against teams with winning records and Cain has won four of his last five home starts against winning teams.

Sunday, July 10

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels (-140, 6)

Aces hook up in Anaheim, with Seattle's Felix Hernandez (8-7, 3.22 ERA) facing Los Angeles' Dan Haren (9-5, 2.65 ERA).

Their overall numbers don't begin to tell the story. Haren has won back-to-back 1-0 games, allowing a total of five baserunners over 16 1-3 innings. He has a 1.80 ERA at home, where batters are hitting .162 against him.

Hernandez has struck out 134 batters in 137 innings and is holding hitters to a .229 average.

The Under is 12-2-2 in Haren's last 16 home starts, and 10-4-3 in Hernandez's last 17 road starts against winning teams.

Heading into Saturday, the teams had combined for 36 runs in seven previous meetings this season, an average of 5.1 runs.

Pick: Under

Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees (-160, 7.5)

Rays starter James Shields is having a huge comeback season, but he has a very poor history against the Yankees. The Bombers have won 12 of Shields' last 16 starts against them, including a 6-2 victory on May 17.

New York also has won nine of CC Sabathia's last 10 starts. He's been virtually untouchable in his last three starts, allowing one run over 22 2-3 innings. Lifetime against Tampa Bay, he's 8-5 with a 3.24 ERA.

Sabathia says he's not bothered by his All-Star snub, but he's pitching as if he wants to prove a point. It wouldn't be wise to get in his way right now. He leads the AL with 12 wins and ranks near the top in several other categories.

The price on the Yanks is a bit steep, so shop around. Some books have had New York as low as -150.

Pick: Yankees
